The makers of ATLA gave Nickelodeon that option. They told them if they wanted to make it into a movie, but instead chose to animate the TLOK. However, the makers new how much the fans wanted to know what happened so they did the second best thing, turn into a comic for us.

Im just glad we know the truth. And they keep making more which shows how successful they are, ie. 'The Rift'
