Going through the kakashi gaiden yesterday, something struck me that i had'nt noticed the first time i read it:
You must be registered for see images

Konoha's military power was at an all time low, the fire country had been greatly weakened by war. In the latest chapter:
You must be registered for see images

The darkness that Madara spoke of was not, as many assume the uchiha rebellion or the current shinobi war. It had come right then, a progressive deterioration in konoha's power and position. To madara this was inevitable given Hashirama's policies, i.e reconciliation with the other villages(love) as opposed to building up military power. The very same philosophy of the elder son vs the younger.

Anyway, Madara seemed certain that this time would come. When it did, he would pick his successor. This was for 2 reasons:

1. Konoha's weakened position would allow his successor(obito) to carry on his plans with minimal interference.
2. The Uchiha had to have been marginalized thoroughly so this successor would not face opposition from his own clan as Madara had.

As for why it was Obito in particular, these two images:

You must be registered for see images

Obito saving Kakashi's life and ......:

You must be registered for see images

Madara saving Hashirama's.^

I think Madara realized, that when someone goes so far for their friend, their expectation from that friend also increases. Madara was let down by Hashirama( at least that's how he felt) and he realized Obito would react the same way he had if he were let down by Kakashi(possibly making him orchestrate the circumstances of Rin's death). It was a smart ploy and it payed off. Also, Madara expected Obito to attack kakashi much as he had attacked Hashirama, thus this question:
You must be registered for see images
'Did you feel regret for your past teammate?'
My guess is that Madara did not expect that reaction, but ultimately it did'nt matter as long as Obito stuck to the plan.

I feel like Obito was chosen because of his potential honestly instead of him having similar feats to Madara when saving Hashi from killing himself. While most Uchiha go from 1T-3T, Obito first awakened his Sharingan with 2T. Everyone else started with 1T.

He stated himself to be a loser in the gaiden, making an uchiha strong is a non issue for someone like madara. All that matters is someone who would share his ideals.
So basically you're saying Obito is very similiar to Madara, story line based?
Yes, from that specific generation(the previous generation uchiha may have had more potential, but the circumstances were'nt right as i pointed out in the OP.

I agree that it was essential that someone had to share his ideals but he kinda forced his ideals on Obito too. Obito would not have taken this path towards for peace if not for Madara, Obito didn't get this twisted til Rin's death which was most likely caused by Madara. Also, I don't think Madara could have made any Uchiha strong, I still think Obito just had plenty potential. Not all Uchiha are strong, Itachi managed to take down 3 3T Uchiha on the police force with relative ease in front of Sasuke the day before the massacre. I think Obito being chosen might have a little to do with both but mainly Madara saw his potential.

Madara scripted that because he knew that Obito had the type of personality that would follow the path that he did if such a thing were to happen. Obito was stated by his teammate to not have any strength, and he lost badly to guy. Being an uchiha, getting exposed to loss automatically gave him power(the magekyuo), while hashirama's cells and the kenjutsu of the rikudo madara taught him did the rest. His own potential was not really the reason, but i guess you could say his hidden potential was what stood him out.

Geez even i would pick up obito.
He awakened 2t sharingan right away and then MS. This means he is the most emotional/sentimental (obviously) uchiha we've known.
And as sharingan power is fuelled by emotions he definitely shows huge promise. Too bad he didnt take his eye back.
Needless to say madara was lucky with him.

Obito has the best potential. He has proved to be very skilled and smart over the years since madara's death.

Obito is now top 3 strongest easy because of madara's training and his incredible potential.

Thanks.
Obito = Young Madara
Not entirely accurate, but yeah.

Completely agree with the bolded. Also, turning evil is also associated with uchihas who have strong emotions as Tobirama said, that was the real reason.
I think he chose him because of his hidden potential , nonetheless ... good thread
Thanks.

Obito was most likely the easiest Uchiha Madara could manipulate. He was on deaths door, only had one eye, half his body crushed by boulders. Madara saved him so he gained some kind of hero's worship. Then Madara started feeding him his ideas and started subtly manipulating him. Eventually he probably orchestrated Rin's death so Obito would be so emotionally traumatised that he would seek solace in the only one he thought he could trust, Madara. And Madara struck while the iron was hot. And the rest is history.

no, Zetsu admitted that madara had his eyes on obito for awhile, I would guess even when he was in the village. There is something about Obito that made Madara want to train/manipulate him.

Do you know what a clan is?
Best honest but troll-ish reply ever. But anyway On topic, aside from madara knowing that he will do anything for a friend i think because he knows how deep his love is for Rin. And that deep love might have been the same thing he felt for his lil bro Izuna.
