I just feel that everybody is expecting too much out of the story. Sure the Rin flashbacks and Obito 'TNJ' got out of hand but it makes the end result of the war more significant than Naruto just punching his way through everything and constant fighting which would have got a bit tedious. The Kakashi/Obito story is quite essential in the aspect of Naruto's character because it reflects just how he's managed to grow up a bit. I'm not a fan of his character, but he does have some redeeming qualities which earn respect.
Besides, if people want a real villain, we still have Madara on the case (Since I'm not at all keen on Sasuke being the FV) so he will provide the real feel of a war before Naruto defeats him of course.
