The way I interpreted it was that the sage's sword was weakened by Kakashi......Kakashi made Obito doubt his ways with visions of an alternate path he could have chosen, which made Obito lose his conviction


or maybe it was just Obito's own conflicting mind......ether way it was mainly due to Obito's inner turmoil

without conviction, a blade's edge dulls, as said by Mifune when defeating Hanzo.....even though Hanzo was one of the greatest shinobi of his time
