I know I'm going to sound really ignorant and self centred but here goes..

I've been through a lot of things, I am now 24 but I have seen stuff during my childhood that no kid should have to see. I had many things to be upset about and to cry about but I never did.

I'm not going to say the specific problems during childhood I had but they mostly included family problems, debt and a lot of shouting, screaming, etc.

I experienced a lot. I had to grow up fast or I was going to sink. When I was around 6-8 I realised that the world isn't a nice place, it doesn't care about nice people and you either have to sink or swim. Most of you probably won't believe me but even going through all that I never once thought about "commiting" or running away. When I was 12, if anything I couldn't give a rats ass anymore because I had seen it all/gone through it all. It was always the same old arguments, fights, etc.

I'm not saying it was just those little family problems that everyone has. I had some traumatising moments that even to this day I'm still scared and horrified.

In a nutshell, my early childhood (the day I could remember till I was about 15) was horrible but I went through it without shedding tears that could fill a river.

My family is very healthy and happy now but I will never forget some stuff that happened. Some violent (not towards me, my brother or my mother), some sick stuff I had to deal with when I was very young and some disturbing (not sexual) events.

In a nutshell, I was fine as a kid (almost emotionless) and I'm happy and healthy now. I've been through things not many people have and the people who have, most of which are most likely not very 'normal' now. Surprise surprise, I'm not depressed!

What sparked this thread was the amount of people I saw in the pharmacy with anti-depressants and similar drugs.

I don't understand why people can't cope and come to terms with their problems. I did, and millions possibly billions of other people have as well (some may have even had it worse than me)

I witnessed and experienced horrifying things as a child, and even though I have to study my ass off 24/7 I couldn't be anymore happy than I am. I met new people, made friends, reconciled and that's the key to my happiness.

Hardly. While the big stuff didn't phase me, I was mildly upset at my physical appearance. MILDLY

Head[strong] or stubborn would be a better word :p

Seems like you have strong control over your emotions. Depression is cause by a chemical imbalance in the brain, that's not the only cause, but that is one of them. When you have a chemical imbalance, you need to take the antidepressants they say.

I've only experienced depression stemming from my surroundings. Easy fix for that, change the shit around you. Don't put yourself around the things that only bring you down.

its basically the strength of the mind.
you have a powerful mind. that is good keep it with you.
however some people have trouble dealing with life, and many people are hated and abused growing up. not just by parents or family but by others.
when one has alot of rejection and when someone is constantly called a loser and failure, and isn't really good at things they tend to fall into depression
not to mention depression is also a medical condition also, sometimes people just can't handle the major occurences in life, sometiems getting out of bed is to much. it doesn't matter if the children are the most popular and have amazing parents medical depresssion doesn't care.
there is alot more to it, but at the moment i am to tired. lol

unless you go through it you can't.

So its not appropriate for you to create a thread like this. Everyone is different, and deals with things a different way.

I have never suffered from depression either, but i do have family members that have gone through it. they try to describe it, but its not the same as living it. I know its something that is a serious problem in north America and be treated. All people just want to be heard, have a purpose, feel wanted, appreciated. And its sooo much deeper than that. So if you don't feel those basics(keeping in mind i know its a lot more involved then that). You don't feel good, so it makes life seem hard, overwhelming.

So when you say you're going to sound arrogant and self centered you're right and this topic is not appropriate for a public forum of this nature.

Fair enough. But I left out some minor details. Yes, I was bullied for a short period of time. Didn't have any friends for all of third grade and was constantly told by my older brother that I was friendless and worthless. Still didn't let it get to me.

Fast forward almost 15 years... Top of my class at med school and still doing my intern cutting back almost a year and a half. Not so worthless huh?

I think this turns back to the whole nurture environment. It depends on the people you have around you. A loving and supporting environment will pull you out of your depression and make you whole again, (Like Naruto) whilst an grim and unsympathetic environment will make you fall into deep depression and loneliness (Like Obito). I just used those two examples to get the point across.

strength doesnt have anything to do with it.many strong people also experience depression.depression isnt anything bad.it can happen to anyone....the only difference is,some people give in to depression and start to take pills and that kind of stuff and some people overcome it...

point is,you cant understand depression, you have to experience it in order to understand it...

I doubt you had seen it all mate. You'd have to travel the world for that ;p.

But uh the problem now is that people don't want to tackle their problems. And on top of that the current society isn't helping.

For example, relationships.. Cheating rates and divorces have sky-rocketed.

Shedding tears is actually a good way of realization. But depression is nothing more then overthinking.

Everybody copes differently. I'm the only member of my family not taking antidepressants. I don't know what the deal is, maybe I'm just lucky or maybe I'm surrounded with a better system of support. Environment plays a big role and that's not within everybody's control. It's nothing to do with being smartest or strongest, intellectually I don't rank myself very high when I compare myself against the rest of my family.

The worst thing to do would be to hold it over people's heads and point out how 'special' you are because you don't need drugs. That's just being a douche. You're not different, most of the population doesn't take drugs. Of course you'll see a lot of people with drugs like that at the pharmacy. You're at the PHARMACY. I'm surprised you know so much about what drugs people were taking out, they give people some privacy here.

you don't fear,or get depressed from things that has become your 2nd home, now do you.it's that suffering and pain that makes us strong, that betrayal and cold eyes of people that makes us realise the fact that this world is hell and there is no such thing as hope or god,and it's that heart of ours, that withstood the pain and became a heart with no fears, that makes us so strong to withstand any obstacles.the world is a cold place to live, and there are mainly cruel people, but at the same time i am lucky enough to make good trust worthy friends just like you.but that doesn't change the fact that how we've grown, now does it.so there is nothing wrong to not get depressed, and those who get, well they are just not lived a life like us or aren't strong hearted.

Agreed. There is no reason to be depressive. Everything has its exit and can be solved. Never give up! :yayy:

Well, depression is a mental illness with visible effects on the brain... For some people, having a positive mindset won't help.

Outside the game one makes makes many comments. It's not like those people who fall into that state consciously choose to do so.
