I don't like saying "I'm sorry"

In a close one's bad situation, do you say "I'm sorry"?

It depends on the situation of course and the person on the receiving end of your thoughts.

And if you feel awkward saying it, then you're better off not saying it.

It sounds like your heart is in the right place in expressing empathy. Don't second guess what you think is right.

I used to say "I'm sorry" when someone I cared about lost someone or a pet, but lately I find it's too formal for someone you know really well. Like saying "my condolences" tends to feel very distant too. I will say it to an acquaintance, but not a friend.

As for being sorry during an argument, if I am right, I will force myself to apologize to keep the peace, but inside I am boiling mad that I have to apologize for something I never started. I try and tell myself that by continuing the fight I involved myself and thus should apologize too, so it eases my pride slightly.

And what makes you think that saying 'I'm sorry' is compulsory law, if you don't feel like it then express yourself whatever way you find best. People follow into a herd with this sort of things, but if the core meaning is lost that is to sympathise then it's pointless; like saying sorry and not meaning it.
