No, you are misunderstanding a bit. Madara wouldn't have awakened Rinnegan had Hashirama died and simply took his DNA. We are told now, that it was because of Ashura's chakra that he gained so. It's Indra's + Ashura's combo that creates the Rinnegan, or in other words, the DNA from Uchiha and Senju within whom these two reside as chakra or whatever.

That is a pretty interesting view. Considering the whole Yin-Yang and the theme of balance, it would make sense that both of the reincarnations' death are required for the transmigration to occur. One leaving before the other would seem imbalanced.

i'm curious why Sasuke has nine tomoe on his left Rinnegan. Was it result of Kabuto injected Hashi Dna into him?
