I was searching through a HxH FC and saw a interesting post regarding HxH's art. It was comparing HxH's artwork from it's online scans (that people love posting in discussions regarding how "bad" HxH's art is) and the official volume art-work that Togashi redone himself. The point is to show that the artwork isn't bad at all and the reason why he even posted those scribble artwork was because he had health problems and stress which presumably started from YYH. Ofc, he went back and redid the artwork for the volumes, so saying HxH has terrible artwork by just judging his rough-work/sketches is pretty dumb. Togashi is an independent worker for the most part so keep that in mind.

Again, I take no credit for finding/creating these comparisons. Please be mature about this discussion as well.

I'm sure you get the idea by now. I don't think it was posted here before. Anyways, it's obvious by now that there's a huge difference from the online scans you see on the forums & other manga sites vs the art that appears in the volumes. Yeah typically there is always a difference between online scans & volumes for all series but with HxH the difference is noticeable. If you want to see more comparisons, then check out this album:

I also recommend reading through this interview. It did change my views on Togashi and his work ethics. It'll explain why Togashi works by himself.

tl;dr
Togashi is not as lazy as you think he is & his artwork isn't "bad". The art that appeared in the volumes were actually pretty good, even by today's standards.

Yep, this is a fact Togashi always redraws his chapters for the Tankobon format. It's a great improvement over weekly chapters.

Thanks for sharing bro:win:

I still don't think it's that great. In my eyes, he's definitely a better story writer than he is an artist. Then again, like you said, he does most everything by himself, which is ridiculous.

Np :p

Thanks for sharing that interview ;)
thanks for sharing
No problem :)
I honestly like that the artwork is subpar adds to how great the story and characters are.

It also has a charm to it.
First time I heard that.

Yeah that was opinion, I don't mind if you disagree.

I have most of teh volumes, I still think the art in them is bad :(
Yeah, no worries. Mb if it sounded like it was factual, it was just my opinion. I just wanted to show ppl the difference between the two. I'm actually more of a fan of his recent artwork (Dark Continent arc) compared to the ones I posted above. :)
Thanks for posting

Yea most people are aware of that. That doesn't change the fact that he handed over raw drafts/poorly drawn while the manga was being serialized. Of course he redrew the final pages later on because it would suck even if the volume had those raw drafts only.

Other mangkas hand over the final copy on weekly basis and even if they redraw some pages it's mostly to correct mistakes etc. Thus the difference is not that visible not that often at least. He simply draws too slow for a weekly mangka even after years of experience to hand over something like that or he spent too much time on other parts and didn't give have time to draw the final panels- only he would know.

Not most. Yeah, Togashi draws/works by himself most of the time, whereas other mangaka's have assistants. What's with the killua speed-drawing, how's it relevant? lol.

Did you notice how he drew the rough image by the basics and then redrew it and how many times he needed the eraser? Mashima used a pen. Having assistants has nothing to do with it. Was Mashima using one in that video? It's about basic drawing styles, methods and skills.

Assistants are commonly used for inking, lettering, and shading, though the predominance of black and white art in manga means that unlike in the western comic industry, a studio rarely employs a colorist. Some mangaka only do the sketchwork for their art, and have their numerous assistants fill in all of the details, but it is more common for assistants to deal with background and cameo art, leaving the mangaka to focus on drawing and inking the characters.
For example Shueisha is publishing digitally coloured OP volumes and Oda had assistants otherwise too. It doesn't mean Oda didn't work on the chapters. He draws all his characters himself and only background is done by the assistants. So his skills still do matter.

The original scans that we see are general sketches that Togashi draws.. It's basically everything without screentones...
It's not like he literally draws all of that in the final manga volumes..

He takes long with chapters because applying screentones takes an excessive amount of time, although it's much easier. Instead of drawing everything by hand, he uses the screentone to fill in his prominent negative spaces.

The original images (the bad ones) are what Togashi actually does on his own, What comes after is just a little cleaning and screentone application with most likely a computer.

Just saying he doesn't actually draw most of the fascinating stuff..

It has been posted at NB itself a few times so Yeah I thought anyone interested in it here already knew that..
Yet people still refer to the artwork from the online scans as if it's Togashi's best art-piece or something. It's usually the anime only fans that have that idea and non-HxH fans but w.e.

And you said :
^ Your OP. So I pointed out that H x H art work is not that much appreciated for a good reason. :p If you are going to ignore that there are many other mangkas which are better at it or faster at it, I'm fine with that but then you shouldn't be calling others dumb for it for considering these factors.

The back pain would hinder him a little less if he was faster at drawing as it would result in less time having to sit up for work. :p
I only ignored your post regarding other mangaka's because it was irrelevant. Just like me bringing up HxH in a Naruto discussion, no? I know that he isn't the best artist, everyone does. If I wanted to make that point clear, I wouldn't have said the art looks "pretty good" IMO. xD

That's a dumb joke & it's pathetic. I thought I made it clear in the OP to be mature about this. >.> I'm surprised that I have to tell a mod to be more mature lmao.

So now expanding the scope of topic or commenting about reasons why he might need more time, amounts to being immature, joke and pathetic? Sorry for not being that impressed with the art or the work ethics as you are, whether it's redrawn(or added screen-tone) or not. There was no need to be so defensive for pointing that part of the problem was probably his slower speed and not being enough time which leads to rough draft being handed over. Obviously you didn't even try to understand what I was saying. I removed the part about work speed which offended you so much as I am not going to explain it anymore.

People are going to use those crappy pages because they were still published as a chapter in the magazine. We may have seen those scans only but those who paid for WSJ or Viz( unless Viz publishes the edited/retouched chapters only) but didn't buy volume again, they too would have have to make do with those chapters only. Or pay again for better art. So they are going to be dissatisfied with that aspect. And when they are not satisfied they are going to pick on worst of the pages.

Besides there were complaints that the volume 32 has the same scribbled art in between as it were in chapters like etc in WSJ and they were not retouched.

Many of the volume buyers rate story high but were disappointed that rough drafts made their way to the volume too. Use google translator for reviews and even that would give you a hint. In contrast the intro to the next arc in chapter 340 was drawn well and quite promising. So much for the work ethics...

Now is that on topic enough for you?

His story has a pull despite that & that's what makes it work- the world building and unique style of narration. I would ask not to be offended when people do not like art inconsistency, but whatever.
