How would you have written Obito better to make him evil?

I liked him perfectly as he is. There's this thing called sub-text and if you guys paid him nearly as much attention as you do Itachi, Sasuke or Madara...you'd know that thinking that Rin was his only motivation for the War is a horrible oversimplification. One of the more broken, interested and developed characters in the series.

Kakashi is a character who overplayed the Rin theme a little hard nearer the end of Obito's life in the manga. That's the only time the themes the character embodied got a little annoying. But i'd still take that over the 1000 wasted pages of Uchiha feat wanking fanservice the other ones receive.

Make him start to think the world is hell long before his supposed death. Make rin just one of the contributions to his belief not the main trigger. Give him other attachments, like say he saw his parents corpses in the battlefield or something.

I'm fine with Rin being one of the main triggers if it were revealed that losing his parents made it traumatic experience for him to lose someone he truly cares about.

But we had more than enough traumatized villains that were good in the depths of their hearts. Too much of the same pattern made everything boring, a single plain-evil villain wouldn't.

They were supposed to parallel Naruto. The manga is called Naruto after all. Naruto had a rough childhood and being shunned by the village caused him to act out. He felt like he didn't belong and if he didn't make any friends to give him a sense of purpose he could have become just like the villains. Gaara was the most pure example of this. Nagato more of what Naruto could have become if he didn't grow up in the sheltered village of Konoha and was instead exposed the darker side of the ninja world for most of his life. Obito had the dream of become Hokage and wanted what was best for everyone, his obsession with Rin symbolizes Naruto's obsession with Sasuke. Obito was an insecure screw up and had no love or parents, but if he couldn't protect Rin how could he ever be the Hokage of a village how could that ever have meaning when the one person he wanted to impress more than anything was gone, he didn't want to live in that world. So his aspiration to become Hokage became a perverted version of that instead he wanted to become the messiah to lead the world into a perfect virtual reality where death and pain didn't exist. He is a perversion of Naruto's ideals. Madara is more connected to Sasuke's character.

But from the authorical point of view, you can do this once. Not ever. single. time. It got boring pretty fast.
