Shikamaru is easily one of the strongest characters out of Naruto's age group. I think he'd do good against plenty of ninja, but someone like Pain or Madara would definitly win.

Shikamaru is really good though.

Shikamaru is very smart but not that strong as you state. he runs out of chakra and stamina very fast, so he needs to finish the battle asap. his shadow techs are strong in their own way, but overall it's just about average or above it a little.

WEll i would say out of Konoha 11 Naruto, Neji, Lee, Sai (though including him its 12) and Sakura would definitely win (except if he had a big plan beforehand, but even this doesnt apply to Naruto) and Shino would have a very good chance

Shikamarus value isnt on 1 vs 1 its team work

Shikamaru in my opinion is one of the best fighters I have ever seen. He can be very deadly if he has the motivation and doesn't consider the fight to be a drag lol. The reason I think Shikamaru is one of the better fighters is because his mind is one of his greatest strengths. This kid can come up with hundreds of different strategies to take on his opponents with the the quickness! He examines his opponent inside and out, from fighting styles, attacks, movements, etc. With this knowledge he comes up with ways to counter every move they make. So when Shikamaru is serious in battle, then his enemies have one hell of a fight on their hands!
