[Discussion] How Oda Does Fights

Shounen manga are mostly known for the battles and its also what fans debate about the most. When you look at "strongest" lists from series like Naruto, Bleach or Fairy Tail, the differing opinions are, for the most part, not THAT different. They are fairly consistent but for One Piece....dear god are the opinions diverse and inconsistent as all hell.....some of them aren't even filled with fanboyism and people actually believe that their opinions are objective(even Sabo=Fujitora.....)...that is mostly due to how Oda executes his fight scenes.

When was the last time Oda drawn a pure 1v1 battle that involved no distractions, letting their guard down, being caught by surprise, injured prior or a person not being handicapped in some way? Even with luffy vs Lucci, Luffy only won because Lucci kept walking away assuming Luffy was done for. Even Luffy vs Doflamingo and Zoro vs Pica were circumstantial.

There is also Oda's #1 battle tactic of always using characters as hype tools by handicapping them. In order to make Guy A shine, he'll pit them against Guy B but have that character handicapped in order to allow him to save face. Too bad many readers don't know what context and portrayal is and take things at face value. Big Mom is a perfect example.....Oda has severely weakened BM in order to keep the SHs alive and give them moments to shine but there are still people who somehow takes this as BM's full strength being trash.

I mean, Oda never plays all of his cards in one go and loves to tease and leave things ambiguous and convoluted, relying on portrayal and context within the story to fill in the gaps that once again, many people can never notice or comprehend. You only have to look at Marineford for a perfect example of how crazy the opinions of the fanbase gets because they miss all the context of Oda's battles or should I say, scuffles.

Edit: great thread though especially the first part. I like how close he keeps people's strength in tiers though. Makes debates good, but we haven't seen like more than half the fights mentioned.

That's exactly what it is. People have this idea that the yonko are untouchable badasses of chaos, destroying everything in their path and the fans CRAVE destruction and feats. If you show weakness, you're trash Even Kaido has displayed himself as a drunken idiot and has to be rational in some way in order for him to maintain an empire-like pirate crew.

Its the top tiers, the yonko commanders and followed by the "worst generation" tier or whatever you want to call it. One Piece fights are very complex but as you said, it keeps discussions at an all time high while in Naruto forums, its non stop Naruto vs Sasuke, Hinata vs Sakura and Itachi vs Minato.


And another point with the off screen battles. Akainu vs Aokiji was off paneled leaving fans to speculate and it even happened to Jack. Then you have Mihawk in which people kill themselves over whether he's a top tier or not thanks to Marineford.

It's good that one piece has distraction and shows the fighting between all characters simultaneously. Otherwise it would be like Fairy tail and bleach ,same repetitive boring shit one by one.

Problem with one piece is people with unique abilities are not given screentime but only badasses with overpowered destructive shit abilities. A series goes bad when the focus is on overpowered morons like it happened to Naruto in the War arc.

One piece wasn't like this earlier. Destructive powers need to stop. Rather unique and unconventional abilities like Trafalgar's abilities need to come up

Yes I did. I thought Doflamingo's power was an absolute but it turned out it depended on durability of strings smh. Lame twist.

In the marineford arc it was as if he could control people indefinitely ignoring standard durability. Like seen with Diamond jozu.
He seemingly cut Oars Jr legs out of nowhere, it should be taken into consideration the same Oars survived a island destroying vacuum blast from Kuma. His power was too much of an absolute than a destructive type. Too bad he was cutting buildings like any other power puffed moron in One piece.

Even the forever infamous Zoro vs Sanji debates follow this rule. Characters were used as hype tools for Zoro so he gets elevated to the moon. Sanji was used as a hype tool for other characters and the fans bury Sanji alive. Context does not compute.

This also happens in One Piece to an extent but at least Oda set-up the universe in advance so you know after the first 100 chapters or something where to put someone on the power scale roughly.

It leads to exponential power growth of the main hero who has to keep up to beat them, but by doing so side characters get left in the dust and become irrelevant. Like Piccolo or Chouji.

Oda is smart to show the destination first and the road towards that goal is linear growth so that Usopp can follow it too.

After this they will either become friend and respect the beat down.

I thought it was real cause their are so many people that need to matter.

If you don't think the end of Marineford added to the already decent hype for Shanks as a character, then you're basically an example of the type of readers you wrote about in your original post..

Too bad many readers don't know what context and portrayal is and take things at face value.
