How much does the artstyle of the manga/anime affect its overall quality for you?

If the artstyle is terrible in my opinion (best example is One Piece) or just not appealing to me in any way, then I don't give it a try. No matter how good reviews or recommendations might be.

Yes it bothers me , ex : One piece I CAN'T TAKE IT SERIOUSLY

Well.....your loss, I guess.

Depends on the anime in question. If I'm really into the story then the animation/art can have issues or be old or simple or whatever. On the other hand I have indulged in crappy shows that just looked f cking awesome. And then you have stuff like Tokyo ghoul and fate/ that just do both well

Yeah, I'm talking 'bout Jojo.

Its not just the art-style that pushes people away from jojo. Other factors too like, ie another popular one is the length of the series.

With JoJo the artstyle to some people can come off as "gay"/flamboyant. I personally love the artstyle but for a lot of people it's just not their cup of tea.

You couldn't get into JoJo?

Don't confuse it. Animation and art style are two very different things. EG: Mob Psycho 100. Very simplistic art style, incredible animation.

You must be registered for see images

Yea sorry bout that. Pretty confusing at some times

Yeah most people dont really give a **** about the art if the story is very good. One piece and hunter x hunter got some pretty shitty art,yet they are part of the greatest manga ever. Story comes first before visuals.

Yeah, I get you. I, like many, had high hopes for SAO before finding out it was just a twelve year old's power fantasy in a nutshell.

Well, I guess...you don't think about it much because of how divided it is, but it must look pretty big when its all put side by side.

No, actually, I really liked it. Part 1 was pretty slow, but I ended up binge watching Parts 2 and 3 in no time, and I'm about to start Part 4.

No, art style has nothing to do with writing and story, however how the panel shots and camera angles are drawn does help, and this is something One Piece does well especially in fight scenes.

Hunter x Hunter doesn't look that bad. It certainly doesn't look that special either, but its not ugly, per say.

I see complaints and that's what I usually gathered

Largely, though if a story makes up for it with the actual plot then yeah it's irrelevant, or at least to me. Some art styles are weird but none that I've come across until now were "drop-worthy".

This opinion only applies to manga, anime is kinda more complicated.

Lol literally the only design that has EVER put me off completely has been One-Piece, the design just looks like it has no idea what its supposed to be doing, whereas other similar styles such as Kill La Kill and Guran Lagan both don't try too hard to do anything the style can't convey, which is pure epicness.

For me its all about character design though, ugly characters like in OP and FT are just a huge turn-off to an anime or manga.

Manga; must be readable.

Anime; must be watchable.

There has been mangas where I can't get into because of the art so I just drop it. It's very rare in anime... I always let it slide but when it comes to manga, there's something that tells me ''drop it'' and I end up doing that.

Then I don't think you've read the manga. The animation looks awesome but the manga art is unbearable sometimes.

Considering manga is largely a visual medium, if you don't find the visuals appealing then yes. That's kind of a bid deal. A personal example is One Piece, I just don't find the art style very appealing, which places a very large mental block in my mind whenever I attempt to give it another chance. It doesn't matter how good the story or the characters are.

By comparison, here's how the same question looks in different mediums: How much does cinematography affect a film to you? How much does grammar affect a book to you? How much does gameplay affect a video game to you?

Thinking the same thing. I was waiting for someone to give a good answer. Good job, Sir.

I've never read nor watched it, but skimming through the manga pages, it really doesn't look that bad.
