That's true. The concept of death doesn't really register as much at a young age just like when Obito lost his parents the same age as Sasuke did yet he didn't awaken a single sharingan. However as a teenager you gain a better understanding of it a lot more leading Sasuke, Itachi, and Obito to awaken their Mangekyo Sharingan at 13 years of age while 15 years for Sasuke.
From my understanding too according to Tobirama that feeling great disappointment in yourself can also awaken/progress the sharingan.
So maybe Madara's took longer than the other 3 uchihas because nobody significant dead during his teenage years so his Mangekyo Sharingan didn't come death but disappointment.

Wasn't he like 8 or 10 years old during that time? He had 5 brothers so he certainly wasn't like 4-5 or 6 when he awakened that 2 tomoe. I think Sasuke was also 8 years old when he awakened his first tomoe during the massacre.

He is absolutely younger than genin Sasuke. And this is him with second tomoe, almost exactly like we saw him with Kid Hashi. Maybe 10 years old going on 11? So maybe he awakened the second tomoe months or 1 year later?

It's quite probable fights just got more gruesome. With all the kids dying time after time, the parents got probably insane in the battlefield.
No wonder why Madara awakened powers and experience in such young age.
