or he was 99 years old and even worse for ware the hiruzen and took on a throng of Vikings

honestly though it would have been epic, but the problem is though it would be well known how it happened (unless his killers died as well in the process (likely))

I guess that Hashirama took permanent damage against Madara and weakened. It's noted in databook that Hashirama gave the tittle of Hokage to his younger brother, Tobirama, so he was obviously weaker than Tobirama at that moment. He still fought in the first ninja war and some random ninja killed him.

i feel madara giave the first hokage a long term damage after he take a faction of his power.the power that madara take fro hashirama could be supported his healing skills
