If you think about it to use wood release one must also know water and earth, what can extinguish fire? water, in addition to this hashirama is the onyl capable of completely taming the nine tails [this is explained by yamato when naruto loses control during his fight with orochimaru near tenchi bridge]

What if Madara did try to light him up on fire and Hashirama used his Wood Style to block it which resulted in burning branches. Then Hashirama proceeds to attempt to wrap Madara with his burning wood.
Fire>Wood but it won't burn to ashes in seconds. Hashirama could use the fire on his wood as an advantage over Madara as well. That is, unless Madara is fire resistant.
As for the nine tails, Hashirama managed to restrain him. Suppress him and then Mito sealed the Kyuubi inside of her. (Whether she helped Madara as a jinjuuriki in the fight or helped him by just sealing the Kyuubi inside herself and staying out of the way to make it an actual 1v1 is still unknown to me.)
Madara only had EMS at the time. I'm still not sure whether every Uchiha's MS have different abilities or the same but I don't think Madara had Amaterasu or Tsukyomi. Otherwise, Sasuke and Itachi would have Kamui as well. When EMS awakens, a new power and a new light takes root to their eyes as well. Susanoo is rare amongst the Uchiha and they need Magekyou on both eyes to use it.
I do see Wood Style restraining Susanoo and I don't know about his other powers with his EMS either so with what he's shown so far with his EMS alone, I don't him winning against Hashirama.

The 1st Hokage could also control the power of the 9 tails chakra and suppress it. It would be useless in battle against him.
have you try looking / focusing on hashirama and the main reason why he beat madara? if madara is on another level that time hashirama as well. maybe madara's fire technique was or should i say the best. but hashirama's tech was not like suiton / water in a glass or doton / earth in a pot. he really have more than something. he wouldnt be a " fairy tale " with no reason.

To be frank I like Madara. And im not saying he shud have won.
Becuz the 1st was a Godly figure. Able to control a mass of living rampaging chakra takes skill and power.
He captured and controlled them all. To even question the nature of that fight is blasphemy.
But there are also speculations.
There are talks about Madara throwing the fight becuz he simply wanted Hashirama's DNA.
I mean anyone can't just walk up to Hashirama and ask him nicely. Madara had to beat it out of him and in the process got his fire breathing behind whooped.
I personally think that if Madara had any intention of hurting Hashirama he cud have done so with reletive ease. its hard to believe Hashirama walked away with just scratches when Madara who had Kurama under his control. barely got away with his life. Cuz I dnt think Hashirama wud let him walk away after pulling sum sh!t like that.

there is in no way the fight between hashi n madara was considered fair.
hashi has life no jutsu (trees, hp, chakra out da wazoo) and madara has haxor eyes and 'possibly' the strongest entity in narutoverse on his side (at least in the beginning)
Now, viewing what tobi is capable of, we are pretty certain that controlling a tailed beast and fighting at full potential is next to impossible. which kinda explains why madara possibly lost kurama in the first place. 1st had the necklace thing so controlling the chakra of kurama was as simple as holding the crystal.
as far as elemental prowess goes... Konoha is still there, made from life no jutsu. i'm almost certain neither of the contenders were limited to 1 single release especially at their level. its like how sasuke spams lightning now, simply because he is more used to it, not because he is incapable of any other element.
I'm pretty sure Itachi explained that you must unlock Amat and Tsuk in order to perform the 3rd Susano'o so I think it is safe to assume that Madara had those techs as well. LOl!! why u always say that kyuubi on madara side ? closely watch the fight between 1st and madara.. 1st released kyuubi from madras seal and now there might be slight chances that kyuubi gets wild and act against madara... :noc:

according to how you say it : Madara must be way stronger : but remember that Hashirama has Suiton , which cancels the Katon : so it just depends on When will the user use his Attack
about susanoo : actually it's weird to admit it but people who can break through susanoo are eventually : Tsunade and Hashirama : JUST THEM AND I KNOW what i am sayin (last phrase is for the Flamers who will charge in saying "Raikage" and such, Raikage did this because they were many against one so madara couldn't concentrate on one individually ! and you have to admit it : Madara is hell Strong if he can stand the 5 kages till now and about to win this ! ) Hashimara can beat susanoo with fist attack and with Mokuton : by using Jekkai Kotan and using the wooden atmosphere to get out madara from susanoo.
on the other hand : we haven't yet seen madara's use of the Armored susanoo (the one like the susanoo sasuke has right now) meanwhile we haven't seen the armored susanoo getting breached from outside in : so till now : we know that This susanoo can't be breached
) so two possibilities : 1 - madara doesn't have it : which makes sasuke stronger than Him # kinda weird 2 - Madara used it against Hashirama and he got madara out using Mokuton !
