I edited my post but it's obvious he didn't become Indra's equal. The indra who he became equal to would be base/3 tomoe sharingan Indra since against MS indra he used spsm. So they clearly weren't equal and we know the sage is the one that gives the 6psm.

You guys act like he did this prior to their fight. That’s not what happened. Hagoromo chose Ashura as his successor this led to their rivalry. Hagoromo did NOT give him his power first then they fought.

As others have stated Ashura reached Indra’s level through help and hard training. The people in the background did NOT participate in their fight. They are back their to show the difference in how they obtained their powers.

Indra through birth and Ashura with help. You guys are taking the panels out of context to downplay Ashura.

YES Indra was stronger for a time. But Ahsura caught up eventually.
