He was getting owned and had to use the shinigami seal + they were not using their powers fully. Madara explained how his fights with Hashirama altered the landscapes and just Hashi being equal to Madara speaks for itself.
Some explain this with "powerscaling" but I don't like that idea at all.

I would rate them

1. Hashirama
2. Hiruzen
3. Minato
4. Tobirama
5. Tsunade

Based on how much % of wins they'd have if pitted against all characters of Naruto 1 at a time

Hmm, so you say that this old geezer having the strength to hold hashirama and tobirama with only a 1/3 (due to making 3 bunshins) of his normal strength from making seals (by holding their arms tight) for enough time to seal them with the death reaper isn't the same as defeating them? Well if we say it isn't it is still quite amazing for a man of his age U_U

I am honestly gonna say that Hiruzen is the strongest person beside of SO6P in the story U_U

I know what most say, and I don't really have any solid evidence, however, the best proof is to argue by using the time skip as why hashirama was described by madara as being a god-like character - after the time skip :)

Hiruzen as well was described as the god of shinobi - in part 1. His battle against oro and 2 former kages weren't exactly colorful - so to speak. We didn't see much from him. As I said above, though, he did show a lot of quick thinking and being fast and strong despite being that old, but I guess Onoki is just the same way. However, this is also after time skip.

How does my so called "after time skip" argument work. Well the best example is by looking at Oro. He wasn't very good either, when he fought hiru. He did, however, admit that Hiru could have killed him back then, when he was all cornered in a cave by hiru and some anbu. So why did he summon the edo kages? He knew he needed them, obviously? Perhaps he didn't but then he would also be risking a lot. Why else summon them? Anyway I said Oro didn't show much in this fight, yet he ended up having his arms sealed.

Later in part 2 he fights Naruto with 4 tails going on a rampage due to hatred etc. for Oro since he abducted Sasuke. What does this weakened Oro - unable to use hand seals - do? He shows that he can use some jutsu that puts him high above how he was when he fought Hiru. So the so called time skip argument is valid? I think so. It's not like Oro could train a lot with those arms. Why didn't he sent a giant wave of snakes over Hiru instead of standing behind his 2 edos thinking that would help him? That had crushed the entire stadium...

So if Hiru was shown after the time skip - perhaps in some flash back from his prime, I'm certain Kishi would give us his answer again. The God of shinobi U_U

This isn't hype mostly though. His hype is being the greatest water user but it doesn't say alot. Everyone in Naruto talks about how great Minato was, how he was the fastest alive and how you should run if you see him, which is why he feels like one of the most hyped characters to me. Hashirama from the same age has received alot of hype while Tobirama has nothing. It's still obvious he was very strong but there just isn't much we know atm.

Well all the Kages have some super hype Hiruzen was call god of shinobi and the best hokage at one point but now manga is saying Hashirama. I have not seen enough or heard enough of Minato that best Tobirama's hype and feats. Can't you agree a water tech similar to what Kisame did to team Guy that created a lake would cause major problems for Minato? S/T vs S/T and one guys S/T is at a disadvantage and possibly increase the other guy's is a battle changer. What is Minato without S/T? Still fast as hell lol but you know what I mean, Tobirama has a S/T too I just don't see Minato winning.
