History of Isshin Kurosaki *Spoilers*
Isshin Kurosaki appears to be a normal human at the beginning of Bleach, however it is later revealed that he is actually a Shinigami during his fight with the Grand Fisher. If you recall in the first chapter of Bleach, when Ichigo is first attacked by a hollow, Isshin is found injured and unconscious along with his daughters Karin and Yuzu. At the time he faced the Grand Fisher who became an Arrancer, Isshin easily dispatched him. However he was helplessly injured during the first chapter. The answer to this is revealed during Ichigo's Dangai Training. Isshin reveals he had used the Final Getsuga Tenshou and lost his Shinigami powers. Even though it he does not state it himself there is solid evidence that prove so. After Isshin defeats the Grand Fisher, Urahara appears and states that Isshin lost his Shinigami powers 20 years ago. Isshin and Ichigo's Zanpaktous are related since the two of them are father and son. They both can use Getsuga Tenshou and Isshin says that Engetsu (his zanpaktou) was the same when he tried to learn Final Getsuga Tenshou.
If you paid any attention to the recent chapters, you would know that Shinigami will always have Shinigami Powers even if they are lost. Ichigo, who is known to have an enormous reiatsu, lost his Shinigami Powers after using the Final Getsuga Tenshou and became a normal human. However Rukia states that the Shinigami Powers that dwell deep within Ichigo can never be lost. I think what she refers to is Ichigo's soul will always contain Shinigami Powers. When he completed his Fullbring, the reiatsu from his badge restored a small amount of his Shinigami Powers. It makes sense because the amount of reiatsu gained from his Fullbring is not as much as Ichigo's original reiatsu (his former shinigami powers) In order to restore Ichigo's Massive reiatsu, Gotei 13 poured their reiatsu into the sword made by Urahara and transferred it to Ichigo. With the reiatsu of Gotei 13, Ichigo's Shinigami Powers deep within his soul were brought out once again. I think that to restore one's Shinigami Power, the person must receive an equal or greater amount of reiatsu.
So it has been established that Isshin lost his powers from using Final Getsuga Tenshou and it is possible to restore Shinigami Powers. Now I would like to mention a conversation he had with Urahara after the fight with the Grand Fisher. He states that it's been a long time since they saw each other and is relieved Isshin is okay. Isshin asks why and Urahara says that it would be bad if he got weaker and blame him for it. Isshin says he would accept becoming weak and he doesn't blame him. Urahara asks if Isshin feels resolved after getting revenge for Masaki, his dead wife who was killed by the Grand Fisher. Isshin just states that he regrets that he couldn't save her that night. This is a lot of Isshin's background.
So 20 years before the start of bleach he abandoned his Shinigami powers and for some reason Urahara thinks he is responsible. Isshin did not have his Shinigami Powers at the time his wife was murdered 6 years before Bleach and it appears he did not have them at the start of Bleach either. During the battle against the Grand Fisher he regained some of his Shinigami Powers. Aizen and Ginjo, who were both previously associated with the Soul Society, know Isshin.
My theory on his background is that Isshin was once a shinigami (captain?) in the Soul Society. He met Urahara who defected from the Soul Society 100 years before Bleach and somehow became aware of Engetsu's ability, the Final Getsuga Tenshou. Ginjo a substitute Shinigami who seems to be obsessed with acquiring power left the Soul Society and met Tsukishima. For some reason he fought and was defeated by Isshin who used Final Getsuga Tenshou. Since that time Isshin's Shinigami Powers have been slowly restoring with Urahara's help.
Though I know the two might have nothing to do with eachother, I still think it's weird how Ginjo knows that Ichigo is a half breed and that he lost his powers. In my field of understanding, Ginjo must be aware that Ichigo is Isshin's son and Ichigo must have some reiatsu since he is half Shinigami. To not sense any reiatsu from Ichigo, Ginjo must have known Ichigo lost his Shinigami Powers using Final Getsuga Tenshou, like Isshin did when they fought. Ginjo then approached seeming to be an ally trying to restore his powers but really wanted to acquire Ichigo's Fullbring.
That's my theory, please let me know your thoughts
