In logic that is called an argument from ignorance. The exact opposite can be said proving god such as "because there is no evidence disproving god, therefore he must exist." Another example would be for me to say that before we had evidence that air contained oxygen, oxygen did not exist. See what I'm doing yet?
There is proof, and has been for a while. The big bang theory. Here's a quote from Steven Hawking.
