Chapter 9: Audacity's Call
Hiruzen sat in the same position under the fig tree, not moving a muscle. His arms, legs, and back started to hurt with the burning sensation of lactic acid buildup.
The first of the forty-nine days was not yet over.
The bright heat of the sun warmed Hiruzen's face, and some light shone through his eyelids. Then, the light disappeared, as if an opaque veil had fallen over his face.
"I can't stay here," thought Hiruzen. "I've got more important things to do than sit here meditating...."
Hiruzen opened his eyes just a crack and, as they adjusted to the darkness, he could make out the figures of the fig tree, the bushes, and the grass swaying in a light breeze. The stars above were his beacon, and that which called him toward his rightful destiny. Hiruzen now opened his eyes all the way, as there was no one around.
He looked towards the north star, which he found to his right, and judged, from its direction, the general direction of the Rock Country. As he turned to face the Rock Country, his vantage point was the same as when he was sitting.
He paid no attention to this, and hurried off of the hill, into the forest.
After a good hour or two of jumping through the tree branches, Hiruzen happened upon a small rock formation which had a smooth, concave carving off of earth near the ground, making a perfect shelter.
Hiruzen reached back to his backpack and..... "Wait, where's my bag?" he suddenly thought, as a shock of fear permeated his mind. "Damnit, I've forgotten it.... damnit all...."
He laid down in the cave, and decided his best bet would be to find a road, and then a rest shop.
Just then, before he was even finished thinking, sleep weighed heavily down on his eyelids, and welcomed his to its realm.
