No, I don't believe that to be 100% fact. Just that they have certain advantages over one another. In an all-out fight, anything could happen. You should read it more as Hiruzen=Hashirama=Minato.

Can we also say that the real strength of Hiru/Hashi/Minato is derived from THE CAUSE they fight for; without which they are weak?

This easily explains how Old-man Hiruzen could win in that fight.
