Look up the word "Mandala" and then "Samsara" if you are confused...
Hinduism is pretty complex, and there are many interpretations to achieving enlightenment.
For the Naruto series... this is how I see it applying.
I. THE IMAGE: 3 overlapping circles = 3 levels of reincarnation. See Mandala symbol.
A. Like the image above. There are 3 rings/barriers from the middle of the circle.
1. The image is that of an enlightened being. (They are able to see through the 3 rings, and what is required to achieve enlightenment.)
B. How it applies to Naruto.
1. The ability to see this barrier, is symbolized by the image of the Rinnengan in Naruto.
II. THE NUMBER NINE:
A. The symbol that looks like a "9" does in fact mean "9". This was an ancient way of writing the number 9.
III. SAMSARA BY DEFINITION:
A. TRAP:
1. The Samsara is thought of a "trap", a never ending cycle between Karma and Reincarnation.
2. In layman terms... how you live your life affects what you'll be reborn as. The "trap" of being caught in the cycle is caused by the material world breeding desires, that leads to the ignorance of one's true self.
3. The goal however is to break through this cycle. And achieve Nirvana!
IV. TRANSCENDING THROUGH EACH OF THE THREE LEVELS.
A. Requires the ability to see them (SPECIAL EYES).
1. The special eyes are symbolized by the Rinnengan shape in the middle.
2. The non-rinnengan eyes are those of EVERYONE ELSE.
3. The Rinnengan are the eyes of The Enlightened who is able to see the requirements of transcendance, because he achieved them himself...
4. You need to be reincarnated with the Rinnengan. Can't be achieved during your current life.
5. The Karma/conscience during your life, will give you rinnengan... POSSIBLY... and ONLY if you lead a pure life.
Nagato was born with Rinnengan, and he wasn't the first. In Buddhism/Hinduism... achieving this Rinnengan level is VERY VERY RARE...
6. When you die after receiving Rinnengan... you become a god. You transcend all planes of existance.
You following thus far???
V. An Individual is made up of 2 parts.
1. SOUL: A blank template that is transported between vessels depending on your KARMA.
2. CONSCIENCE/KARMA: Your conscience decisions during life, good or bad, and how it will determine where your soul will be placed in the MANDALA CHART of Reincarnation...
3. See below for the 3 different levels.
4. (Think of Pein's soul stealing technique, and collective conscience in the next explanation)
VI. THE THREE LEVELS OF REINCARNATION.
A. HELL: The soul is transferred into a low class form
1. CONSCIENCENES: This evil, because you are in hell, is stripped from your soul. IE You have bad Karma.
2. The conscience needs to go somewhere, and this is the "phenomenal world". The soul being a clean palate at birth.
3. There are different BAD KARMAS. Some worse than others.
4. Similar bad karmas cluster together in this Phenomenal world.
5. When enough of a bad karma type gathers together, it forms a mass of chakra, and transcends to the physical world in the form of a natural disaster.
6. In Naruto The Natural disasters are the tailed beasts
7. The 9 Tailed Beasts are the most evil and most prevelant types of bad karma.
8. The number 9 was chosen because it was on that Mandala. IDK. Works for me.
9. If you fall under this category, your soul needs to repair itself, and you will be reincarnated as the lowest form of a living thing... a plant.
Naruto: The Tailed Beasts are a collective of human malice that can only obtain consciousness inside of a Jinchurriki. Otherwise the Tailed Beast acts irrationally and wails recklessly. The sharringan is special because it is able to "interact" with the the NON-conscience mass of evil.
B. "Way of the Ancestors," in Naruto "The Will of FIRE" -- 2ND LEVEL OF REINCARNATION. "Tobi is a good boy" lol. not.
1. The fate of those who sacrifice themselves.
2. Upon death, the soul is converted to rain and brought back down to the earth where it nourishes plants. (Think of rainwater and being purifed-think baptism)
3. These plants are then consumed by animals, who expel the soul in the form of semen which provides it with a new body after conception.
4. At this level of rebirth, one can potentially gain what is supposedly higher incarnation through birth (ie human) , but their is a risk of reincarnation into an animal (Akimaru)... which is still better than a plant.
Naruto: think "the Will of Fire"... Those shinobi who sacrifice themselves for the betterment and future generations. Those who do this come down in rain. Why do you think Pein, who as Yahiko hated rain, now has it falling ALL THE TIME. Pein believes that he is doing this for the good of mankind. To end the Pain and suffering of the "endless cycle" of not being able to become enlightened, because of the material world. Greed, war, hate ect... Pein said to Akatsuki, that all of their reasons for being in the organization still breed war and pain.
When the 3rd Hokage died... I believe it was raining... then it got sunny. Then Kureni got pregnant with Asuma's child... possibly the reincarnation of the 3rd Hokage. He was a great person, thus deserving of a human reincarnation... see how it fits?
C. The highest level of reincarnation = ENLIGHTENMENT.
1. There are 2 forms of this, 1 being an animal and 2 is taking a godly form.
- First being that of the ANIMAL:
I think of the First reincarnation of a good person, as an animal... being that of the summons. Frogs, Dogs, Pigs, Slugs... that all are able to speak and have conscience. Not Akamaru... lol... well... maybe... idk. These animals live in seclusion, that are brought out only in time of great need, and lend their power of control of the natural world.
- Second being that of a GOLDY FORM. This requires seclusion and meditation, and refusal to give in to the material world (Pein up is his tower). Such discipline allows for the transcendence of notions of space and time, which leads to the cessation of rebirth, and therefore liberation. Hinduism has many terms for the state of liberation, most commonly known as NIRVANA.
In the second, I think of Pein. The eyes in the center of the circle, now at this point have the rinnengan. They have achieved enlightenment, and see the barriers that the "ignorant masses of people" will most likely never reach. Pein grew up in a world of Pain. Yahiko vowed to rid the world of pain.

LAYMANS TERMS:
If you are a bad boy, you will be reincarnated into a plant, so your soul can heal itself. Next time around, you will become a pig or dog, unless you are really lucky and get another chance to be a human again. As a human the only way to become enlightened is to live a life of seclusion and abstinence and no porn/drinking ect AND THEN DIE... When you are reborn next, you have a chance to either be a significant animal (Fukusaku), or an enlightened being (Pein). The chances of reaching the 3rd level is like 1,000,000,000 to 1. IF you are an animal in stage 3... you still have a chance to move down a level, and a remote chance at becomes enlightened. You must be born as a human INTO stage 3.

MY THEORIES AND ANALYSIS OF THE RESEARCH:
I believe that Pein, has found the ability to "reincarnate" the conscience (ie memories of their life) into himself. He is achiving and gaining the power of the gods, the supernatural phenomenal world, that was previously chaotic... except when the chaos is sealed in a Jinchurriki.
There are MANY more forms of this random chaos that exist. But only 9 of these forms were sealed into humans. Because they were the most evil/powerful.
Pein is in essence, trying to "help" everyone, by helping them "skip" the step of achieving good Karma, by forceably doing it for/to them.
Pein is collecting EVERY various category of evil conscience into himself... thinking that it is a temporary sacrifice until he achieves his goal... to bring all human existance into Nirvana.
Hell realm has the ability to pull a soul of of a body... as we have seen. HOWEVER!!!! REMEMBER THAT THE SOUL & CONSCIENCE ARE 2 DIFFERENT THINGS....
The soul will be reincarnated into a higher being... BECAUSE IT WAS SACRIFICED FOR THE GREATER GOOD... or so Pein says... because he has the rinnengan he is "SO CLOSE" to achieving Nirvana himself. Pein then takes the bodies, and the CONSCIENCE, including memories, and incorporates that into himself.
I believe that Pein will "REPLACE" all the individual consciences he has collected thus far... and replace them with all of the Tailed Beasts chakra... which collectively would be like 10000X more so than a individual person.
ONLY THEN will be have enough power... TO PULL EVERY SOUL... out of EVERY living being... Creating the largest Mass Sacrifice ever. Every animal and person will then reach Nirvana!!!
The only entities left will be plants... that have life energy, ie natural chakra... as I said before... plants are souls that are being repaired, and have not been tainted by previous reincarnations... THUS the world will be reborn, without evil or malice...
And eventually... another rinnengan user will come around... Remember that the previous Rinnengan enlightened person, was able to show peoples how to activate their chakra/inner soul energy... these people could either be good or bad ninja. The previous Rinnengan user thought that this would be a way to bring people closer to enlightenment... but this was a failure and resulted in constant war...
Only now, after these ninja, who are able to convert their soul energy... were able to gather the different collections of evil conscience (Tailed Beasts)... could a professed successor come, and finally achieve mass enlightenment... because things got out of control.
Think of Orochimau, and the akatsuki... they are trying to reach this level of power, forcefully... through their own interpretations... number one being immortality... Orochimaru decided to do this by becoming the closest thing to the rinnengan form of enlightenment... that being a snake, and symbol of rebirth. Other akatsuki didn't get that far, and just settled with immortality.
I hope you were able to follow all of this, and my theory on Pein... and Basically How I think Naruto will end... of course with Naruto beating Pein... and saying...
"The cycle... is in existence for a reason... and its cool and all that you are so close to being completely transcended... but leave us the @#$@# alone! We don't need your help."
