It is not cliche, it has just little spotlight in the manga which make it hard to happen. However the most important is it has progress in development even if hardly to seen, while Sakura and Naruto relationship was once developed more then seemed to regress back.

There is no shinju to bore the god fruit so that's unlikely.

Well Madara called some Divine Tree to wrap people after casting IT, so who knows... Maybe it is reason why Madara was "killed" by Black Zetsu due to summoning God Tree out of body after IT cast.
