Closing the eyes would be the job of "family" or a close person; which means Hinata; not Naruto.
And it is one of the most common traditions around the world; it means respect for the dead one. (Konan have not shown to do so; but right after his death; she covered him with papers...that is common aswell; when somone dies; he/she gets covered with covering such as cloth is it is available; Lee most likely did not have access to a cloth in a war. And Konan went to her death after Nagato died for the same ideals.)

Lee was the one who closed his eyes; was he Neji's family? No; he was a teammate/rival but hey; considering Hinata's characterization; it ain't surprising to see Neji's teammate was closer to him and thinking more about Neji than Hinata who is suppose to be a family.

Her character design and drawing may not be good to you (IMO I really don't care she's MY favorite female character in any anime EVER, even ranking above Rukia) but she is still beautiful in every aspect of not only her character but in herself. Well I am one of the saner hardcore Hinata fans of the base .... but still I wont give the first position to Hinata (That belongs to the new Lara Croft ... for me at least) ..... BUT Hinata is nearly everything you may want in a lover: ability to see beyond the cover, empathy to be patient and understand, love and dedication beyond comparison ... not mention I feel that Hinata is someone whom you can reveal ur darkest secrets and gravest weakness and receive only understanding and kindness from her (People who say she is a stalker and only thinking about Naruto ... please notice that Hinata never got a proper panel time where she is NOT in presence of Naruto... so Naruto would be drawn into context somehow) ... But still she has her negetivities .....
