Age : 31
Clan : N/A

♠ Looks :

Professor Hershel Layton dons a top hat, a brown coat over a dark orange shirt, brown pants, and a pair of dark green shoes. The hat is a dark brown-black color with a red stripe at the brim. He is rarely seen without it as it is perhaps the most precious item in his possession and after Claire died, he also takes up her small, sphere-shaped necklace that carries a strong scent reminiscent of her.

Background Information

♠ History :

Hershel Layton and his older brother were born to a normal family on the outskirts of the Land of Iron near the Samurai Bridge. An icy, snow-covered country, the Land of Iron normally never associated itself with politics, but unfortunately, the town that Layton had been born into was caught up in an incident between Iwagakure and Sunagakure. The area he lived in was ravaged and his parents were taken away by warring shinobis, leaving Layton and his brother to fend for themselves alone.

A naturally curious shinobi, Layton would often scavenge to come up with unique ways of surviving, whether it be hunting nearby creatures or putting together curious herbs to cook up fairly edible dishes. He spent many a days sitting in a high elevated spot that allowed him to gaze over the fair scenery of the Land of Iron and that of which was beyond. For his sharp eyes, not the most miniscule detail was missed - he picked patterns in a single, falling leaf to the beats that a bird flapped overhead. Layton found himself most intrigued with the workings of the world and would often be dissatisfied if he unable to think it logically through. Though this hobby was often embraced during the summer, it became tougher and tougher endure for young Layton and his brother when winter came around. When one day on their last morsels of food, Layton found himself curling up next to his brother, certain of final death. However, just as he was about to pass out from fatigue, a group of samurai came to knock on the small hut they had been living in, offering food and service, but on one condition - only Layton or his brother could come. His older brother, naturally, pushed him along to receive guidance from the samurai and despite Layton's protests, he was whisked away thinking he would never see his brother again.

Growing up in the Land of Iron, Layton was taught samurai techniques with which he used his own free time to practice and develop. In the cold country, he also met a young woman named Claire. Throughout his learning, Layton often many chances to speak with her and gradually opened up as they equally developed feelings for one another. Upon becoming a graduated samurai, he was sent on missions to protect the Land of Iron and strengthen their military and after a successful Kage Summit Meeting of protecting the general, Layton came back to a congratulations from Claire and the gift of the current top hat he wears. Yet, tragedy struck just as quickly as later that day, Layton was notified of Claire's death when a technique that the higher-ups had been working on backfired and killed her in the process. Approached by her own father, Layton was handed Claire's own necklace and told that she had loved him very much. Struck with utter dismay, Layton took the hat she gave him as his last living memento of her and rarely takes it off due to respect and devotion to her.

A few years passed before Layton was notified of a rogue shinobi that had been causing trouble within the Ninja World. Breaking the rule that shinobis and samurais normally stayed out of one another's affairs, Layton was dispatched to resolve the issue. After being led on a long and tiring journey pursuing the defected shinobi, Layton clashed against his prey only to discover that it was no other than his own brother harboring an immense hatred for the shinobi of Iwagakure and Sunagakure. As they had taken away their parents when young and forced Layton and his brother, Descloes (Theodore), to endure and suffer hardships as mere children, Descloes swore revenge against the two villages and would spend his entire life enacting upon it. Layton clashed against his brother in a very unwilling fight but decided to let him go in the end.

Upon deciding to let his victim go, a rule that severely violated the code of the samurai, Layton was evicted from the Land of Iron and left to wander the Ninja World. However, Layton does not regret his actions up to this very day. Rather, it leaves him to ponder about the mysteries of the world and the reason he continues to live and fend for himself in such a harsh society. Naturally kind-hearted, Layton would often find himself in troubled situations, but due to his capable abilities, he is normally able to fend off enemies. His greatest joy comes in helping people and although unaffiliated with any village, he has met many who have been willing to assist him or sit down just to have a nice chat. These have included Souji, from Konoha, who he has, on occasion, talked with over lavender latte and also traveled with him for sometime helping inexperienced shinobis learn a few tricks here and there. His most well-known and trusted companion, Layton has invited Souji to take a quick road trip to learn more about the world. Along their travels, Layton has also met several others from Konoha as well, including who seemed to have an unhealthy obsession with the Second Hokage, Tobitrauma, and the Hokage himself, a man Layton holds high regards for. He has also stumbled upon another named Drackos, but he has unfortunately been whisked away by a shinobi who, when Layton last talked with him, seemed to have greatly disillusioned himself with a so-called "Awesomeness Scale". Layton also retains great respect for the great Madara "Chris" Uchiha and politely declines tree from him every time they meet. Lastly, he has on occasions exchanged letters with a member of the Akatsuki who called himself Edward, but every time Layton attempts to invite him for a talk somewhere, the filthy casual seems to never be finished with his duties that he calls "Cornell Notes." Asides from searching for his brother and just wandering about, Layton lives a very casual, traveler's life and enjoys a nice cup of coffee or tea by the sunset each evening.

Other

♠ Youke (又可) :

Being trained as a samurai at Land of Iron, Layton used to carry up to four swords on him at once and could at most, utilize two when necessary. However, after departing from his own country, he only carries three weapons on him at all given times, two of them strapped and one in his hand most of the time. Often in hand, his sword-cane, named Youke (pronounced Yo-keh), is a blade that is disguised as one's normal, every-day aid for walking. Black and gold in color, the cane is rounded on the top akin to an umbrella and has a long enough of a sheath for Layton to pull out the sword when necessary to defend from attacks. Crafted back in his homeland with polished, chakra steel, Youke reaches up to average length and allows usage of most Iaidō, or Samurai Style, techniques. Asides from a weapon, Layton uses it as an intended cane along with pointing out the discrepancies in the environment he notices.

♠ Kongming (孔明) :

An elegant sword that was once Claire's when she learned the basics of Kenjutsu. Layton inherited it after she died and perfected Iaidō mainly through its usage as it is slightly longer than his other two weapons in length. The metal used to craft Kongming (pronounced Kone-ming) was found in the mountains in the Land of Iron and due to its snowy climate, the color of the metal is reflected in the making of the blade itself. A cold, icy blue, Layton finds that his mental state would often reflect its visual appearance upon executing use to it. Thus, whenever he finds himself infuriated in fights or am unable to tap into a logical state of mind to analyze his opponent's abilities, Layton unsheathes Kongming. Its aesthetic design along with the memory of Claire assist Layton to adapt an impassive demeanor to make appropriate decisions. Thus, Kongming is only pulled out by Layton in situations where he deems necessary, otherwise, it sits strapped to his side and unseen.

♠ Zahir (The Zahir) :

His most used weapon, Zahir is a rapier that Layton can pull out to accustom the need for two weapons in his hand at once as it is the same in terms of length as Youke, his sword-cane. Composed of a thin blade perfect for safe stabbing at an edge, its handle is designed for easy grip while protecting the hand at the same time. Although beginning his Kenjutsu lessons with this particular weapon, Layton failed to name it until after Claire died. The name "Zahir" indicates a person or an object that has the power to create an obsession in everyone who sees it, so that the affected person perceives less and less of reality and more and more of the Zahir, at first only while asleep, then at all times. Based off of a legend, the Zahir was a coin that symbolizes the owner's free will, since it can be turned into anything. These feverish thoughts kept him awake for so long until the next day he decided to be rid of the coin. He traveled to a faraway village while carefully avoiding to look at the routes he took and managed to get rid of the Zahir, however, it merely came back to haunt him. In the same way, Layton is filled with unpleasant memories that he is unable to be rid of, especially those that contain both Claire and his own brother. Layton wields his Kenjutsu abilities every battle without failing to call up either one in his mind whenever doing so. Thus, Zahir represents his desire for learning and improving in Kenjutsu, and although Layton sees it as an unhealthy obsession at times, he deems it as necessary, wondering if he'll go mad someday.

♠ Claire's Necklace :

After Claire passed away, her necklace was given to Layton. Originally used by the owner to keep herself smelling nice after exerting heavy exercise, it is a simple jewelry that consists of a purple and barely noticeable, sphere-shaped marble on a gold chain. The marble emits a strong, lavender scent that reminds Layton of Claire every time he takes a whiff of it whether during walking or in battle.

♠ Pouch :

Layton has had many encounters with shinobi who have knowledge of Ninjutsu, and thus, carries a pouch full of random and standard weapons (makibishis, small knives, explosive tags) in the case he was caught up in an unfortunate circumstance and wanted to fight at a range. Furthermore, after observing too many battles in the Ninja World, Layton has noted the rise of Sound users and keeps a pair of earplugs with him at all time. He does not normally use them unless he is informed or discovers his opponent possesses Sound capability.

♠ Coffee, Tea, and Puzzles :

Yeah, he can't get enough of these.

I would avoid batteling this character pure by looking at his appearance. This is the kind of character to rather ask how to go to a certain location than battle. "Sir, may I ask what route I should take to the Land of fire?!". No no, I would even ask him to guide me. :coffee:
