we dont know that, all we know is that kyuubi appeared, what actually happend that night nobody knows.
every shinobi retreated as soon ad the 4th stepped in so maybe he and madara did fight but thats just speculation, alltough we might get some answers in the next few mangas.

hmm dont really agree, speculations can come true from time to time, if we assume every speculation is false then whats the point of the manga section??

you cant say for sure if they fought but there is a theory about that.as itachi said madara was the one who stood behind that atack of kuubi's.and as yondaime came for help pretty late,when many shinobies were already dead,it's logical to assume that he was fighting someone before appearing in front of the fox.and many naruto fans think that person whom minato fought was madara
who knows!
