Hashirama was wrong, dead wrong.

Itachi is not a better shinobi at all,

If Hashirama was in Itachi's shoes, he would use his overwhelming power to scare the Uchiha into surrendering, just like he did in the past.

Hashi could have just peacefully put them all to sleep with this.

Those pollen would take out all the Uchiha without killing them.

Worse case, he could have used Mokuton to restrain all of the Uchiha.

So why is Itachi a better shinobi? Why couldn't he strong arm the Uchiha into surrender like Hashirama did? Why?

Because he wasn't a capable person like Hashirama , that's why.

Now I know Hashirama was referencing Itachi's character rather than strength, but I think that definition is ridiculous. Was being a better "Shinobi" able to save the Uchiha clan? I think not.

Hashirama told Sasuke that a shinobi is the one who endures. What you say there that Hashirama could do to the Uchiha is not enduring.

He wasn't talking about Itachi's ability to stop the Coup. He was talking about Itachi's willingness to sacrifice everything.

Because Hashirama is soft.

In reality, a good Ninja is one that is capable. Itachi was strong, but just not strong enough to scare the uchiha into surrender.

Bet he felt so guilty.

having overwhelming power doesn't make you a better shinobi. What matters the most is your dedication and Itachi continuously dedicated his life for the village. Restraining them with power would only be a temporary solution, eventually they will break out and hell break lose.

He wasn't referencing power at all. In the purest form, a Shinobi is one that endures, and sacrificing a lot is a form of enduring. What Itachi executed (by killing his clan, joining the Akatsuki as a spy and protect his brother) was the most exact example of a Shinobi in the series.

So, now who has the most raw power is the best shinobi? Really? o>o
Hashirama wasn't wrong. Hashirama doesn't think, Kishi does. But judging from the way Kishi wrote his personality, he could very well be modest about his worth (seeing as he doesn't take most things seriously, maybe not even himself in that situation).

Of course, yet the irony.

A "true" Shinobi is actually less useful than a "lesser" Shinobi.

Hashirama was referring to will, and strength of character, not physical power.

Hashirama was saying Itachi was a better shinobi not power wise, but character/decision/etc wise, having to make a difficult choice and taking it upon himself.

I know that.

That doesn't change the fact that the Uchiha would be alive had Itachi been stronger.
