He made a strategy within minutes, planned thoroughly despite the fact he was running out of time himself, his wife was dying and they would be leaving their son an orphan and with a heavy burden and risk. Used quite complicated seals to achieve his goals.
All this needed extraoridinary intelligence, calm thinking under pressure, currage and extreme sacrifice without any personal consideration. He kind of wiped out his own clan and family name and left Naruto at the mercy of strangers. He knew how Kushina was treated by villagers. He wouldn't expect much better for Naruto.
And he was too young- his accomplishment list never got a chance to increase but we see a glimpse of great mind, nice and kind soul, peace loving nice family guy, an excellent leader and hopkage, inventor of new techs, seals and jutsus even if he didn't live long enough to finish those off.
