I am a bit confused about hand seals in Naruto. I know you need them to help mold chakra for ninjutsu and genjutsu. But the thing is I thought you needed to perform the exact sequence of hand seals to perform specific techniques. How is it that some ninja are able to do techs with one or no hand seals?

Like when Kakashi first performed Raikiri, he did the hand seals, but later on he usually just skips it as he doesn't have time. Does this weaken the attack? The power of his Raikiris seems pretty consistent whether he makes the seals or not. But Raikiri (or Chidori) seems to be an attack that just needs a large amount of lightning natured chakra pumped into one hand. I don't see the need for seals at all.

When Tobirama did the Water Dragon Bullet against Sarutobi, he only used 1 seal but Zabuza and Kakashi needed something like 44 seals. How is this possible? Wouldn't it be a different jutsu since the seals weren't the same?

And what about Naruto's made up seal that he uses for Kage Bunshin? Did the forbidden scroll actually have that hand sign on it?

I've been wondering about these things for a while... I'm thinking that hand seals are just to assist in the process and aren't necessary for the actual resulting jutsu. It's not like an incantation for a magical spell where you have to say the incantation for the spell to work.

What do you guys think?

I'm pretty sure they have never really put reasoning behind it...They have only said that a skilled shinobi can use less hand signs but it doesn't weaken the attack at all. It shows a shinobi's skills when they use their hand signs. Almost like a category of who is more talented.

the only thing i know is that Naruto only seems to kow one hand seal, also haku can do hand seals with only one hand
Naruto knows the Ram seal as his main chakra gathering seal. Then he learned/made up the Tajuu Kage Bunshin seal that he uses. Later he learned the seals for the Kuchiyose (summoning) no jutsu. I'm pretty sure they have to memorize all the seals in the Academy, they just learn particular orders for more advanced ninjutsu. Naruto is just mildly retarded or something so he prefers techs with no hand signs.

Ok, so less/no seals means more powerful shinobi is what everyone is saying. Is that from experience using the tech or is it from larger chakra reserves or what? A combination of both maybe? Hmmm....

There are some techniques that doesn't require handseals.! :p and yah, highskilled ninjas like kakashi doesn't need to perform handseals in order to perform a particular nunjutsu & it doesn't weaken the technique.! :D

btw, if i remember kakashi before said that chakra control is necessary in doing a technique and if you have a great chakra control like tsunade's well it's possible for you to learn any kind of technique. It'll just vary in the type of element of the chakra a ninja has.

btw, so that means tsunade has more to show us ? hahah
