You know, I feel like Kishi intended for Haku to be a girl, but realized the whole "Haku, a woman, is a tool for Zabuza, a man" would have been received with accusations of sexism and misogyny, so he made him a guy, but already made that design, so it was too late.

I agree with this, on the other hand though, i don't see why kishi can't treat the girl characters the same as the guys, he doesn't always have to make them have a love interests and they don't always have to rely on someone, they can just be independent..
