Taking everything into consideration it leaves room for only one option the Sharingan. It may very well be that at that time Hogaromo had dormant Ashura chakra(like his son) which awoke at a later time which gave him the rinnegan.

Hagoromo's chakra leads to the rinnegan, Thus making it his natural eye, Like how Obito's lead to giving kakashi his sharingan.

Indra + Ashura's chakra unlocks Hagoromo's chakra which grants the rinnegan, Hagoromo obviously has his own chakra and has done since he was born, Thus the eyes he was born with are logically the rinnegan.

While in the manga, Hagoromo's chakra is connected to the rinnegan, The only eyes he has been shown with is the rinnegan, Uchiha who gained his power/chakra gained the rinnegan, No sharingan powers were gained by obtaining his chakra only rinnegan techniques.

Don't try and use logic with him. It never works. Fact is Hagoromo always had the ability to get the Rinnegan (Like the uchiha with their Sharingan) and he awakened. The rest is just uchiha fanboy nonsense and then trying to wank an irrelevant doujutsu.

Wasn't it shown in the manga and anime? He had the sharingan before gaining rin'negan and confronting his mother. I don't care if anyone thinks that is filler or not. It was made to add to the backstory and answer some questions we had about it. If it adds to the story and gives background that can be applied to the actual story.. then it's not really filler in my mind lol.
