Simple. Sure, they said he was the strongest because he was about to fight..Kind of like how people say tsunade would protect everyone and be able to take down pain.

I think of it as, at that time it was all about the 3rd hokage, but now it's not. I think it's obvious that the 3rd would loose against the 1st. His little flame balls and earth walls would do nothing against someone with wood, amazing healing, ect.

As in, around the time he was fighting orochimaru, naruto was weak...now naruto is strong...See what I did there?

Things change. Simple fact, accept it. I think that his background was not well thought out at the time.

Say the 4rd kazekage was the strongest (not)...yet he could be beat by the 5th....

once again it is not wrong but it does contradict it self in many occasions like with hashi and hurizen and a lot of others too deal with it it is a work of fiction made by a man he makes mistakes like the rest of you it will be ok i promise lol

Well this manga is known for contradicting itself like the bible, but i wouldn't say it is wrong. Still i gotta say kishi is making it seem like hashirama was the strongest hokage for now.
