Guys can anyone tell me what is zetsu actually?

Is Zetsu a Shinobi, Plant or an unsuccessful experiment of a mad scientist probably Madara Uchiha. Moreover in tobi's flashback i think i saw both d white & black zetsu were not attached, so y does they suddenly decided to attach themselves.
