While I get what you're saying, knifes have a purpose other than hurting people like guns
A firearm is easily a tool for entertainment. There are plenty of people who have social events at shooting ranges. Everyone goes out, has fun putting lead down range into a paper target (or clay targets slung through the air), and no one is harmed.
I'll put this issue into perspective for you:

The numbers are absolutely astronomical. Civilian ammunition consumption accounts for hundreds of millions of rounds
annually.
How many people die in the U.S. from criminal firearm use? less than 10,000.

The data clearly shows the trend of firearm homicide on the decline in the U.S. The most likely murder weapon is a handgun and the most likely offender is a person aged 17-23 in a city with a population over 100,000.
Basically, the antithesis of the 'gun nut.'

Most of the firearms used in crime are obtained illegally and in ways that simply can't be impacted by more restrictive firearm legislation - it is like saying you are going to make it harder to buy marijuana by making it harder to get approved for medical marijuana use. All it does is make it harder for the people who only care to use it legitimately go about their daily lives.
It also makes the people who are willing to run guns illegally very, very wealthy - because they can charge a premium for their service. The harder it gets for the average person to get the things they want - the more those things will appear in criminal circles.
Of course, let me tell you why I am willing to kill over this issue:

A little town called Athens, TN.
Basically, the local authorities had built a tyrannical government and were rigging elections with their own private army.
This was in the U.S.
Multiple letters were sent to State and National authorities seeking an intervention - to bring in an outside team to moderate and oversee the election. None were ever answered.
Despite the fact that two company sized units of armed men faced off against each other over a few hours of fighting,
no one died. Despite the fact that it was a literal rebellion - there was no mass slaughtering by the 'rebels.'
This is why we -must- have the right to our firearms. It would be exceptionally naive to believe this is the only case of institutionalized voting fraud and rigged elections in our country - and it is exceptionally naive to believe that those who currently enjoy the power they have will turn it down so easily.
Case in point:

This is the -same- evaluation system used by the VA... the one that encouraged falsifying records to maintain funding levels and resulted in veterans dying (because the VA wasn't enough of an abomination to begin with - there's a reason I will never admit myself to one).
And... the experts/analysts are saying: "Uh... very, VERY bad idea, guys. Holy shit. It will do the exact opposite of what you are claiming it will."
And our government's response? "**** you, we do what we want!"
So. Yeah. You say firearms are dangerous... but then you elect man children with dictatorial mindsets and laud them for centralizing power. I'd rather deal with a few armed psychos than one in command of a nation's resources, able to threaten people with starvation for not complying with his orders (already, the military is seeing its upper chains become a scarily corrupt bunch of politicians who have a better set of knee-pads than anything else... and it's starting to affect the lower ranks, particularly as our forces draw down).
