but compared to EVERY other anime from before the 90's, it was the best dub out there and still holds up today
in what way does it hold up? it has every cheesy 90s dub line and music cue imaginable
And if they didn't fit the characters, then why is Sean Schemmel still getting praise for his Goku, and why does almost no one else who watches it have an issue with the dub cast?
you havent spent much time in the fanbase then. the funi dub purists are gradually seeing it for the shit it really is with the redub for kai. schemmel is actually good there.
the majority of the fanbase despises the funi dub at worst and at best, doesnt care about it. about the only reason it ever got any praise is either nostalgia or the music. or ignorance from people whove never read the manga and realised just how far off course the dub took the show.
The extra sounds, the annoying music - you gotta bear in mind that you're criticizing a series that not even Toriyama had big plans for. He said it himself that he just wanted to make big explosions and over-the-top fights, not a sophisticated story, so if anything, the dub is more faithful to the source material than the original is.
um wrong. toriyama had a personal hand in creating the original anime and selecting voice actors. he was impressed with how toei was doing it.
and the japanese version didnt beat us over the head with sound nor did it believe us to be idiots. the manga dialogue is concise but never repetitive or annoying or obvious. and the dub insisted on shoving as many childish joke scenes in as possible. some dub dialogue actually creates plot holes. had they just kept the old script, they would not be so hated.
Did the series really have so much depth that we missed something by being lazy and watching it without subtitles?
its not about that. its about respecting the material your adapting. if nothing is wrong with it, why exert so much effort into needlessly changing shit?
If the rewrites really did go that far, I would love to hear how "sophisticated" the series sounds when Goku's stuffing his face or Roshi's grabbing Bulma's hind end and the dialogue contains lessons about family values (or whatever was so much more mature than what the rest of us were left with in the dub).
so absically yu think that because the manga was simplistic, that gives dubbers the right to take a steaming shit on the original, and needlesly alter it to fit their own views on how it should be. this is one fo the only dubbing companies arrogant enough to pull bullshit like this. most dubs have the common sense and respect to keep to the same general dialogue with minor alterations when necessary such as character names.
the dub actually altered entire characters like making vegeta some poor little lamb who was abused by freeza when he was fukin already evil before freeza ever came into the picture.
shit like this means that the dub writers clearly dont care about toriyamas hard work and shit on him by changing his work so drastically.
was it so difficult for them to just show some respect and stick to whats already good?
People (critics included) are still gonna be eating up this dub tomorrow morning.
well i can turn that on you and say people, including me, will still despise it.
