i was in my religion and ethics class today and one of the topics of discussion was good and evil.
my question to you guys/girls is do you think that a person can truly 100% either good or evil or do they just act evil/good.

this came up because people mentioned Hitler and said he was evil, and then some other people said that no1 is truly evil, evil is only an action.

so what do you guys think?

p.s i'm an atheist, but have been raised and gone to a Christian ecumenical school, (Anglican, Lutheran, uniting and catholic combined) most of my life.

evil is sometimes defined as the absence of good. people were born with free will and the freedom to choose. I don't think a person is inherently 100% evil but naturally inclined to be 100% good. But if he choose to really be pure evil, he can be 100% evil but its because of his choice not because of his essence or being.

that didnt even answer the topic's Question.. you were meant to answer can someone be 100% evil or good, or is it just an action, and why do you think this.
Someone can't be 100% evil or good

But sometimes: evil = 75% and good = 25%

and sometimes: good = 75% and evil =25% for example..

And yes they are actions, because it's how your mind is set at a particular moment

One can't exist without another, it's like the only universal truth maybe

Even tho it looks like some1 is 100% evil The good will always be there even though your senses can't pick it up

Only actions can be defined as good or evil. A person can't be said to be evil or good unless he does evil or good things. The concept of Evil and good vary also in definition of what is evil and what is good, but there are things that are generally regarded as evil in an of its self(Mala en se). Nobody is evil until they put something evil into action. Have you ever thought of doing something bad? Probably. Does that make you evil. No, simply because you didn't put that evil thought into action.

No one is purely evil or good; that would make them inhuman. That's the beauty of humanity. We are so volatile, and able to shift and change our mindset and actions over time by such a great degree, and that shows our complexity as life forms. This question is one of the most often asked of all time, and it still evades a truly conclusive answer. But back on topic, actions define how evil or good a person is.

No human being is born evil.

Everyone's born at the same starting point, but they are all shaped to what's around them.

Even so, I don't think anyone's truly evil, just like no one's truly good.

Everyone's the same, but it's what one does that defines how other people look at them.

A person that does good will be looked at as good. Someone that does bad will be looked at as bad. But no one's a true rendition of either party, because we're human, and we make mistakes.

The university professor challenged his students with this question. Did God create everything that exists?
A student bravely replied yes, he did!"
"God created everything?" The professor asked.
"Yes, sir," the student replied.

The professor answered, "If God created everything, then God created evil since evil exists, and according to the principal that our works define who we are then God is evil."
The student became quiet before such an answer.

The professor was quite pleased with himself and boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth.

Another student raised his hand and said, "Can I ask you a question professor?" "Of course", replied the professor. The student stood up and asked, "Professor, does cold exist?"

"What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?" The students snickered at the young man's question.

The young man replied, "In fact sir, cold does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat. Everybody and every object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (- 460 degrees F) is the total absence of heat; all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have too little heat.

The student continued. "Professor, does darkness exist?"

The professor responded, "Of course it does".

The student replied, "Once again you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present."

Finally the young man asked the professor. "Sir, does evil exist?"

Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course as I have already said. We see it every day. It is in the daily example of man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. "These manifestations are nothing else but evil."

To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is not like faith, or love, that exist just as does light and heat. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light."

The professor sat down.

Good and evil is based on perception. How do you know things you consider are truly evil? Because someone tells you its evil? Just because you think its evil, to that person they may be doing the right thing, does that make them truly evil? Or just that just make them be someone not following social norms and perceived as evil by others? If religion never existed, and if society never formed the way it did, perhaps the perception of evil would be different. If society formed in a way where killing someone in a fight was legal as long as they fought back, but the greatest sin would be to not wash your hair and keep clean, then "evil" would just mean being dirty, simply because that is what people perceive as evil. In reality, neither good nor evil exist, neither do right and wrong, all that exists is peoples perceptions of what is good and evil, and what is right and wrong.
