Bats are nocturnal mammals that use echolocation to move around and hunt at night. Echolocation is pretty much like sonar where a bat releases a sound and when it hits something it will bounce off said object back to the bat via the ears and will let the bat know just what that thing is or what is around. People think because bats use sound to move around at night that they are blind creatures, but that isn't the case at all as they actually have very good eye sight, just at night they use their ears more. In the naruto-verse I guess it would be the same? Been a while since I've watched the episodes where they were used so I might probably be very wrong here.
