not only what Alpha Scythian said but also whether or not Madara let Sasuke stab him is completely independent of where Sasuke was trying to stab him (in Hashirama's face)

No, Sasuke did something which is more than anyone else did this chapter. It wasn't failure because Sasuke discovered three things.
1. Sasuke discovered Madara can absorb ninjutsu thanks to the black flames attack. Thus, no other ninja needs to do that. Good intel to have.
2. Sasuke discovered that physical attacks can work on Madara because the sword went through Madara. Thus, concentrate on physical attacks. Good intel to have.
3. Sasuke also knows Madara defended Hashirama's face. Thus, it has tactical value to Madara. It needs to be targeted. good intel to have
