so hiyori had to be mutilated? all for gin's personal revenge? the third seat or whoever it was had to be killed? no. no one needed to die. gin could have let it go and brought aizen to justice the honorable way.

Itachi only put those thoughts into Sasuke's head because he wanted Sasuke to avenge the Uchiha's name by killing him

exactly. which is the worst act of cruelty in the manga. why would you brutally and ruthlessly mindrape and corrupt an innocrnt child just to be your own personal executioner because you dont have the balls to turn yourself in and let your village be the heroes? why make sasuke do it? sadism? does he WANT sasuke to lose his mind from the stress and trauma? because thats gonna happen! especially with the uchihas being genetically geared towards hate and it consuming them from the inside.

he could return back to Konoha as a hero

which would not happen. he took down orochimaru and no one gave him a medal or said much of anything. even though oro was ten times worse than itachi and more of a traitor. sasuke left and became a common criminal. only reason he wasnt hunted down and killed like a dog was tsunade's authority as hokage. if danzo or jiraiya were hokage they would have gone to greath lengths to kill their missing nins and stop sharingan falling to enemy possession.
and IF he came back, hed be spat on and abused as a traitorous dog grovelling to them for forgiveness. itd onyl encourage those old feelings of hate to crop up again. we know what kind of unforgiving people the citizens of konoha are. no chance he'd be suddenly accepted back as a hero.
and no way is the trauma of what happened just going to disappear. sasuke was long gone the moment he tried to kill his friends. if itachi loved konoha he would have killed this dangerous madman before he succeeds. but itachi didnt care. he practically ORDERED sasuke to do that to obtain mangekeyo sharingan.
you see with itachi, innocent lives mean nothing. he ordered sasuke to murder people purely so sasuke can be his little executioner and puppet.
it shows how little he trusts sasuke that he has to forge a fake reputation for him as a "hero" based on a LIE. itachi never was killed by him but by some random sickness. why cant the poor boy be a true hero?
