More than 10 years ago, while he was still a young man, Gildarts mets a young lady by the name of Cornelia, their friendship drew them closer together as they fell madly in love with each other. But love only gets you so far. As a young shinobi, Gildarts was driven by the thrill of serving the village and would bury himself in his work as a ninja, not to avoid his love it was just a part of who he was. And as he did, each mission he took grew longer and longer, and this drove Cornelia to leave him, leaving him heart broken and never the same again, but what he didn't know was that she was carrying his child, and would go on to die in child birth. He would find out almost 18 years down the line. Having lost Cornelia, he did the only thing he knew he could do and that was to continue taking the longer harder missions, at this point he excepted one mission, one that had a large warning note saying it was a 100-year mission. This seemed perfect for the man who couldn't stay still but this is a mission that would go on to change him, and realize his own mortality. The mission was the travel the world in search of a very dangerous shinobi, one that was on the same level of Orochimaru, who used the Akatsuki's distractions to help hide himself, his name was Achnologia, a dark shinobi with incredible power and not one to be taken lightly. The mission was to find the man and observe, the higher ups just wanted to know where he was, it seemed foolish to take action against a man such as him without warning, but Gildarts had no choice. He went in with everything he had but he couldn't land a single blow on him, no matter what he tried, even his greatest sand jutsu seemed wasted on a man this powerful. In the end Gildarts barely escaped with his life, since then he has had a large scare across his chest and he has not been seen without bandages on several parts of his body, though that fight was burned into his memory. Following these events, Gildarts spent the next year or two recovering, gaining full mobility in his body to become the man he once was, he trained in his sand arts and began working on his own style which when any would ask he would refer to as crash. Every now and then he would return to the guild hall, Fairy Tail, in Sunagakure to see his adoptive family. He was like a father to them in some senses, or maybe just the goofy uncle, but he always encouraged the younger shinobi and had a lot of faith in them. He would often fight with them but have to hold back as was his way though he did struggle alot of the time. Due to certain events, it was when he returned 16 years later that he discovered his daughter, Cana, that he didn't know he had. From here he went from being a pervy type man to the over protective, lovey, huggy father her, even though really it was too late, she was a young woman but she was just happy to have told him he was her father and how much he accepted and loved her. He promised he would always be there to protect her.
