*the pleasant scenery you thought you were in fades away to reveal a generic creepy forest; dead trees, cobwebs, crows, all that. A cloaked man with piercings steps out from behind a tree, his body just as cold and lifeless*

So you've returned to learn the illusionary arts? I hope you've prepared yourself mentally for this, it's nothing like what you've learned before. Before we begin i need you to tell me all you can about Genjutsu.

*he leans with his back against the tree and arms crossed as he awaits your reply*

Genjutsu, literally, means Illusionary Arts or techniques. There are different kinds of Genjutsu, but all Genjutsu are made to affect the senses in a way that it will impair the target's ability to fight. Genjutsu works by affecting the chakra within the target's brain, which causes the impairment of the senses. While Genjutsu is mainly cast by using your chakra to interfere with the chakra in the opponent's brain, there are other ways of casting Genjutsu as well. Ocular Genjutsu cast by the Sharingan is very powerful, requires only eye contact eith the target. There is also Sound Genjutsu, which is arguably the most dangerous, since it requires only that the target(s) hear the sound that is caused by the technique. Genjutsu does have weaknesses however, and their weaknesses are mainly within the actual technique. The main way of countering Genjutsu is being able to identify that you are in a Genjutsu. Once that is done, you can then use a technique to surge the chakra in your body, thus disrupting the Gen. However, some Genjutsu are so powerful that it doesn't matter if you possess the means to break one. Genjutsu falls under the category of Yin Release.

*Pein nods in approval after you've finished speaking*

Your general knowledge of Genjutsu is acceptable. Now let's go over the intricate details. As you said, Genjutsu affects the chakra flow of an opponent's brain but how does one get to that point? In order to produce a successful illusion you want to mold your chakra a certain way. Similarly to how someone creates Doton chakra for earth elemental techniques, the chakra used for Genjutsu is focused at a certain wavelength which in turn causes the target's chakra flow to become unbalanced and its natural wavelength changed to induce the illusion you want. Typically handseals are used to help in molding your chakra but it can be done through a direct sensory experience such as light, sounds, and scents that vary among techniques. These are known as "triggers". Controlling someone's chakra flow is a difficult task so the caster of an illusion must be near the target for it to have any effect. That's why it is rare for Genjutsu to exceed mid range. Any questions so far?

Sorry for the delay. It'll probably happen again. >.>

Alright then, let's move on to something more practical. As you might know already, i'm not instructing you alone.

He stands beside you and motions to 5 other men walking into view. They are somewhat different in appearance but bear the same Rinnegan.

Whenever you cast a genjutsu, one of them will be your target. My doujutsu can detect when the illusion is placed and how it appears through their eyes, so i'll know if anything is wrong. We'll start off with a basic genjutsu only affecting sight. It is cast over an extensive area, an invisible field, and anyone who enters is make to believe their surroundings appear different than they actually are. The change could be minor like a sign saying something else, or major like a forest appearing to be a desert. There are many possibilities but changing how the terrain looks is the limit. Give it a shot.

Ps. Be very detailed with your replies. I want to see exactly how you perform the genjutsu and its effects.

No worries.

Molding my chakra, I release it into the surrounding area. The chakra spreads slowly through the air, until it reaches the location of the Paths of Pein. As the chakra I released makes it's way into the system of the Paths of Pein, from their point of view, the terrain surrounding them would change. The rocks would turn into metallic spikes jutting from the ground, and the trees would gain demonic-looking faces etched into their trunks and branches. However, to me, the surroundings would remain the same. Thus, the Paths of Pein were caught in an illusion.

*they look around, not noticing anything different*

I see the problem. Your chakra is entering their chakra flows but isn't altering it. Remember, for a genjutsu to work your target's chakra flow must be disrupted. Try again.

Hmm, alright.

In my second attempt, I repeat the process of moulding my chakra and then releasing it into the surrounding area. Upon reaching the position of the Paths of Pein, the chakra enters their system and makes it's way to their brains. Once the chakra released reaches the brain, the chakra begins to interfere with the wavelengths of their brain. Consequently, their surroundings begin to change. Trees began to grow out of the ground, and the rocks would morph into smaller plants as well. To me, the landscape would remain the same as it was before.

Good, you've improved. Let's see if you can handle sets of two. For this jutsu, form a handseal and throw a paper bomb at your target as you cast one illusion on him. The illusion should hide the paper bomb in what appears to be a clone of yourself running at him. Techniques like this one demonstrate how one could combine an illusionary attack with a real one. Just remember its range is limited. There's your target.

*points to a Pein walking toward you, wielding a black blade*

( Genjutsu: Kasumi ) - Illusion Technique: Servant
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: 20
Description: The user does one handseal and throws a paper bomb at the enemy. The enemy, trapped in a genjutsu will see a clone of the user advancing upon him. As the paper bomb reaches the enemy, it explodes

Next, cast a genjutsu on your target who should see multiple clones of you emerge from the terrain. While a normal clone would disappear when attacked, the target would see the clones he'd attacked merely divide into more clones. This is an excellent diversionary technique because you can move among the clones and attack while making it appear your copies are attacking. You could even hide behind an obstruction and let your target waste energy attacking illusions. See if you can fool him.

*points to a bloodthirsty Asura path looking for someone to kill*

( Kasumi Jūsha no Jutsu ) - Mist Servant Technique
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost:10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: This illusion creates numerous illusionary clones of the user that appear to emerge from the ground, trees, rocks, etc. If these clones are attacked, they appear to multiply. The user can co-ordinate his attacks with the clones to make it appear as if they are real.

Technique 1

Forming one hand-seal, I then begin to mould my chakra. Completing the moulding process, I then send my chakra into the body of the Pein that is making it's way towards me. Upon reaching the brain, it's wavelengths are then altered due to my chakra interfering with them. I then quickly take out an explosive tag and throw it at the Pein. This is where the illusion begins. Upon beginning it's flight through the air, a clone of me would suddenly appear to be running towards him. When the clone reaches the Pein, the explosive tag that was hidden under the illusion explodes.

Technique 2

Throwing down a smoke bomb, I then begin to mould my chakra, and then proceed to release that chakra into the air. Merely moments later, the chakra would make it's way into the system of the Asura Path. The chakra would then arrive at the brain of the Pein, and begin to interfere with and alter the brain's wavelengths. I then take the opportunity to hide within a nearby tree to observe the Pein. A few moments later, clones would emerge from the surrounding trees, rocks and ground around him; though these clones would be seen only by him, since it was just an illusion. While the Asura Path is occupied, I then throw an explosive kunai at him. However, I throw the kunai in such a way that it looks like one of the clones threw the kunai. Upon planting itself within the stomach of the Pein, the tag on the kunai explodes.

Keep in mind the chakra should be sent directly into the target, it doesn't travel through the air.

Despite Pein's doubts, you actually mange to pull off both illusions successfully. It's an impressive feat considering the complex nature of Genjutsu. He nods in subtle affirmation. If any expression could show on Pein's blank face it'd be a smile.

You did well this time. Far from flawless execution but enough for a beginner. For the next technique form five handseals before casting an illusion on your target. To him, your body should appear to dissolve into many cherry blossom petals. That's not all. Those petals should surround the target, obstructing his vision as well. In reality you are free to move with your target unaware. Take him down with stealth.

( Genjutsu: Kahen Tonsou ) - Illusion Technique: Flower Petal Escape
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes five handseals, appearing to dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals surround the opponent, blocking his vision. This allows the user to mask his movement effectively.

Here we have a technique that uses your opponent's fears against them. Perform two handseals before casting an illusion on your target. He will see leaves begin to spin around him and eventually fall to the floor. A moment later, he should witness his greatest fear right in front of him. Such a sight should make the target falter or faint if the illusion is especially traumatic. Remember that its effectiveness varies from person to person. Without knowing the enemy's fears, the chances he reacts the way you want become slim. See that overweight guy? His should be easy to guess.

I apologise for the late reply...

Technique 1

Stringing together 5 handseals in quick succession, I mould my chakra and send it straight into the system of the Pein that is walking towards me. As the chakra I sent into the Pein starts to interfere with his brain's wavelengths, the Pein would see my figure dissolve into cherry blossom petals. The petals would then surround him, clouding his vision as a result...or so he would think. In reality, it is just an illusion. Jumping into a position behind him, I draw my sword and walk towards him. Once behind him and within arm's reach, I thrust the sword in my hand through his heart.

Technique 2

I perform 2 hand-seals, proceeding to mould my chakra straight after completing the formation of the hand-seals. Sending my now moulded chakra directly into the Pein, the chakra would then start to interfere with the wavelengths that his brain produces. To his eyes, a massive amount of leaves would begin to gather and swirl around him. A few moments later, the leaves would then fall to the ground, revealing a mountain of food, packets of potato chips and other confectionery. Suddenly, a fire erupts in front of the massive pile of food. The packets are set alight, and burn to ashes. These events are just the product of Genjutsu however, and aren't actually happening. The Pein faints from desperation and hunger.

Sorry if I didn't get the illusion for the 2nd technique right. I had a few ideas in mind, but I chose the one that I thought made the most sense and abided by the description of the technique most.

Pein watches his two defeated Paths get hauled away as he contemplates how the next stage of his training will play out. His student's genjutsu skill has progressed at a decent rate so he shouldn't disappoint this time around. Turning back to his student, Pein demands his full attention.

Very good. Now that we've covered basic illusions you're going to learn how to break or release them. This is a crucial knowledge for any ninja so listen closely. As you know, genjutsu works by altering a person's chakra flow. To return his chakra flow to its normal state, another imbalance must occur to dispel current ones and allow his chakra to reset itself. Three basic methods exist to do just that:

Pain (lol): Possibly the easiest but most dangerous release method is producing pain. Like waking a person in slumber, it is meant to shock the body which alters his physical energy. This in turn creates a spike in his chakra, breaking the illusion. The level of pain needed to break an illusion increases with higher ranked illusions. Here's a basic guideline.

*hands you a scroll*
- D Rank Genjutsu: Chipping a Finger (like one does as he bites to draw blood for a Summoning Jutsu)
- C Rank Genjutsu: Low level Physical Attacks, Bitting a chunk of your Cheek
- B Rank Genjutsu: Low ranked Taijutsu/Freestyle
- A Rank Genjutsu: High ranked Taijutsu, Stabbing Yourself in minor muscle, Cutting yourself, Breaking Smaller bones, Low level Burning/Voltage, Painful Cold
- S Rank Genjutsu: EIG/Sage level Taijutsu, Breaking Bones, Deep Stabs or cuts, Medium Voltage/Burning, Extreme Painful Cold, Bitting your tongue off
Some ninja like myself are more accustomed to or resistant to pain, so this method won't be as effective for us. Hence, we move on to the next method.

Foreign chakra/energy: Basically, having chakra transferred to you by an ally or taking in any foreign energy such as natural energy into your chakra flow will unbalance it and thus release you from genjutsu. The last method is most important.

Kai/Chakra Surge- This one is meant to alter your spiritual energy through sheer willpower. Two ways to do this is through the Kai technique or causing a high chakra surge in your chakra flow. To break illusions with a chakra surge you must release large amounts of chakra from your whole body using a suitable jutsu. It should be at least one rank higher than the illusion so the surge overcomes the illusion. Raw chakra techniques must be at least two ranks higher.

As for the Kai technique, i will teach it to you now. First, form a handseal and focus on your chakra flow. Through willpower alone bring your flow to a halt before suddenly starting it up again with a surge of chakra. This will disturb your spiritual energy and get rid of the illusion cast on you as long as the chakra spent is equal to the chakra used for the genjutsu. Not all genjutsu can be broken with this technique. They include paralysis type genjutsu and Mangekyo Sharingan techniques. Your skill also determines the level of genjutsu you can break, higher skill allowing you to break high level genjutsu. If you're ready, try and break this illusion. Kokuangyo no Jutsu!

*darkness swirls around you, reducing your sight to nothing*
Rank: A
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 30
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes one handseal, causing the opponent to believe they have been trapped in a world of infinite darkness, where their sense of sight is useless. It is capable of affecting multiple targets within range. However, it does not negate their other senses.

( Genjutsu: Kai ) - Illusion Technique: Release
Rank: C-S
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 15-40
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user does one hand seal to focus and then proceeds to disturb his chakra flow by forcefully stopping it momentarily and then "spiking" his spiritual energy, unbalancing his chakra. This dispels any genjutsu set upon the user except MS Eye Techniques, Paralysis-like Genjutsu and Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant. The effectiveness of this technique is dependent upon the skill of the user. A Jounin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to C-rank. An S-class ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to B-rank. A Sannin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to A-rank. A Sage rank user can dispel Genjutsu up to S-Rank. The user may use this technique through physical contact on others to dispel them from Genjutsu. The technique can only be used once per turn and the user still needs to fully follow the logic as to why he figured out it was an illusion

Understood. All of that makes sense.

Looking to my sensei, my surroundings suddenly change as they are replaced by an all-reaching darkness. Forming a single hand-seal, I begin to focus my chakra, forcing it to halt. A moment later I then forcefully spike my chakra, kick-starting it suddenly. A few moments later, the darkness that the surrounding environment was enveloped in dissipated, and now I have regained my normal sight.

Sorry for taking so long :(

Not bad. Combating genjutsu efficiently depends on the method you deem appropriate for the situation. The next genjutsu is more deceptive than others. It is cast on a moving target who is made to believe he is moving in a strait line but in reality travels in circles. This is accomplished by shifting the image of the victim's destination without them realizing it has moved, making them follow it back to where they started. If the victim travels in circles for hours, they'll become exhausted. Try it out.

*points to a Pein who sees Amegakure in the distance and runs toward it*

( Kori Shinchū no Jutsu ) - Sly Mind Affect Technique
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost:15
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion on the opponent that makes them believe they are travelling in a straight line, when instead they are moving in circles. This is only effective on moving opponents. If the opponent travels in the circle for hours, they will be exhausted.

Now i'll teach you a technique used for interrogation. You will place your hand on a stationary target and disrupt their chakra flow. Use your control over their senses to mentally pressure the target and convince them to give away information, similar to hypnosis. It will only work on a target at least two ranks beneath you. Here's you victim.

*throws a random Ame ninja before you. He's tied up so he can't move*
OOC: It's up to you what he says, idc :3

( Genjutsu: Jinmon ) - Illusion Technique: Interrogation
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost:15
Damage Points:30
Description: The user of this technique, upon casting on a stationary opponent with physical contact with them, is able to convince the enemy to give away information. However, this will only work on ninja two ranks lower and below than the caster.

Technique 1

Watching the Pein run away from my position, I begin to send my chakra directly into his system. Then, I manipulate the chakra so that it interferes with the wavelengths of the brain, thus directly affecting the Pein's sight. Without him knowing, he begins to divert from his straight path and into a circular one.

Technique 2

As I look at the restrained ninja before me, I lay my palm upon his forehead and send my chakra into his system, the chakra in his brain being taken control of by mine and disrupting the brain's wavelengths. Without him knowing, he was under an effect similar to that of a truth drug, he would tell me anything I wanted to know.

"Tell me, why is it that the Uchiha Clan massacre occurred?"

Watching him, I await a response to the question I posed before him. Then, with an ever so slight slur, the ninja replies.

"Because...it was part of your plan..."

With that, the ninja dozed off.

Technique 1

Sending my chakra directly into the Pein as he attempts to escape, the chakra then begins to affect the chakra within his brain, disrupting the workings and mechanisms of it. As the wavelengths are disrupted, the chakra begins to work on the Parietal Lobe. Due to this lobe being affected, his visual perception is knocked out of whack, causing his ability to maintain balance and direction to err. From his point of view, Amegakure would begin to slide to the left, when in reality it is still in the same place. Due to Amegakure "sliding", the Path of Pein has to change direction. Due to this sliding motion the Pein sees being constant, the Pein must change direction just as much. As a result, the Pein runs in circles.

Yes, that's it. Now i want you to cast an illusion on your enemy, making him see a massive fireball descending from the sky that engulfs them in fire. This particular illusion is easily mistaken for a fire jutsu because the victim feels heat from the flames as well as everything else. Give these guys something to worry about.

Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 15
Damage Points:N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion where the opponent sees a huge ball of fire descending from the sky and enveloping its target.

Moving on, this is another genjutsu involving illusionary clones. In this illusion you would create a clone that will run at the enemy, jump, and explode into many sakura petals. This serves to obscure the enemy's vision and allow you to attack while he is distracted. Try following up the technique with an attack of your choice. There's your target.

*points to a Pein approaching with a blade*

( Genjutsu: Kasumi no Jutsu ) - Illusion Technique: Mist Technique
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra cost: 15
Damage points: N/A
Description: The user creates an illusionary clone that charges towards the enemy, jumps, then explodes in a cloud of cherry blossom petals which results in confusing the opponent and obscuring their vision, leaving them open for attack.

It's time i introduced genjutsu layering, the overlap of one genjutsu with another on the same target. Basically, two genjutsu that do not conflict with each other may be layered in order to merge their effects or stack them. The most important rule to remember is that when layering genjutsu, the second genjutsu must be of equal rank or lower than that of the first one, else the lower ranked genjutsu will be overpowered and broken.
To release yourself from layered genjutsu you could release each one individually or both at the same time if the release method is strong enough to break the highest ranked genjutsu involved.

You're learning this now so you can fully understand the next technique that follow the same concept. Take this, it's description is very detailed already. Use it on me.

(Magen: Nijū Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu) Demonic Illusion: Double False Surroundings Technique
Type: Supplmentary
Rank: B-Rank
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra: 20
Damage: N/A
Description:
The user will do a sequence of 3 handseals, putting his opponents under a double layered Genjutsu. The user is able to create false surroundings to fool his targets, much like the simpler version of the technique. However, the illusion is in fact layered. If the opponent manages to release the first one, he will then feel the effects of the second illusion. If, for example, the first illusion is that of a desert and the second that of a forest, upon releasing the first one, the opponent will see the desert fade away while the forest appears around him, making him think he dispelled the illusion while in essence he is still caught in one. Each illusion is equivalent to C-Rank and both are casted at the same time. While normal releases will release only one illusion at a time, a strong enough pain or an external source of chakra can dispel both at the same time.
