I'm going to need some more detailed answers than that. Genjutsu is a tricky field, very illusionary and difficult to learn and use, let alone master. Of all the fields one can learn, it is the most difficult to utilize properly in my opinion, being a taijutsu oriented person. Once more, what is genjutsu?
Genjutsu literally means Illusionary Techniques. Genjutsu are used in the same way as other ninjutsu techniques, like they all require use of chakra and most of them requiring handseals. The way genjutsu work is, it manipulates the chakra flow of the opponent thus disrupting his/her nervous system which affects their 5 senses and creates illusions. So basically genjutsu is used to create false visions and trauma to your opponent.There are several ways to get out of most genjutsu, by excruciating pain using a weapon(kunai) to stab yourself, second method is by using Kai which would release the ninja out of the genjutsu cast if the ninja is capable of identifying it or by using sudden burst of chakra like Raikiri or Chidori. Another method would be introduction of foreign chakra, mostly done with the help of an ally. Obstructing vision of the genjutsu user(specifically sharingan users) could help break the genjutsu by using Hidden Mist jutsu.

Better I suppose. Before we get into actually talking about genjutsu and it's uses, we need to expand upon your knowledge in other places. Genjutsu works by altering your reality through the use of illusions and chakra but before you can learn about altering reality, you first have to understand your reality and surroundings first. Genjutsu manipulates one or more of your five senses and you need to have a strong sense of understanding of reality and your surroundings in order to know something is up and not right.
When you are placed inside a genjutsu, you must discover how it is just that, a genjutsu. People sometimes go into these long winded and pointless discussions on how they realize it's an illusion when you can notice small, simple things that can alarm you. Things that seem to happen suddenly and are unrealistic to the situation and scenario should be an alarming factor. Things like a Hozuki bio causing trees around to change should tip you off as well.
Recognizing is only half the battle, you must be able to counter it as well. Wasting time on long speeches on how you figure out may cost you the fight. In most cases, once you're placed under a genjutsu, you only have a few moments before another attack is sent your way. That means you have to reason very quickly and counter/defend against the genjutsu and then whatever jutsu may or may not be hurling towards you.
That being said, what all ways do you know of that can release one from a genjutsu? ^_^

When I inflict damage on myself while Im in a genjutsu is almost like waking up from a dream.I could use a simple kunai to stab my hand which would get me out if a genjutsu. This is because once I experience excruciating physical pain it disrupts my chakra flow. This releases the genjutsu.

Okay, in addition to what was said, let me just describe to you how I see Pain as a way to release from Genjutsu. When you're inside a genjutsu, you're inside a realm of illusion, and, especially when the genjutsu alters the majority of your senses, it gets harder to distinguish what's real and what's not. Although some genjutsus give the illusion of pain, actual physical pain is almost like an infusion of reality that snaps you out of the realm of illusion. It translates in a spike and even a loss of concentration, but it is mainly that abrupt sense of reality that pushes the genjutsu away. Of course, this is also why different levels of pain will only break different levels of genjutsu. The lowest would be clicking your finger (which is a pain you're used to) That would be able to counter, say, D ranks. Stepping um the game, weak physical attacks would break C, freestyle and low ranked taijutsu or bitting your inside cheek would break say B rank, strong taijutsu stabbing yourself, breaking smaller bones, low level burning/voltage would break A rank. EIG/Sage level taijutsu, breaking bones, deep stabs, high voltage/burning would break any other genjutsu. These are not set in stone, just some sort of reference table for you to follow.
Usually, the most used method is stabbing your thigh with a kunai. Should break anything up to A rank, deepen the cut, should break S ranks. You can do it yourself, or use a jutsu for the same effect (Normally I'd suggest that, since it could be handseal-less, and you might even use it to attack your opponent).
I think that's pretty much all there is to know about Pain releases. One thing though, many of these methods, even if insufficient to break a genjutsu, will be translated as physical reactions under the ilusion, which can be used as signs you're in a genjutsu (For example, if a fire jutsu is incoming, you might be able to sense the heat increasing but see no fireball, so you add two plus two and come to the conclusion you're in a genjutsu. Likewise, say someone slaps you. It is not enough to break you out, but, you feel the slap without explanation and it might be just enough for you to realize and use kai. (Because sometimes it's not about you being unable to use Kai, but just being unable to realize you're in a genjutsu).
