Tiashe hears someone come from behind him, but does not turn to see who it is. It was a habit of his; to ignore the presence of people around him.
The man then talks, and from his speech, he knows that this person is the one to be teaching him Genjutsu. Though Tiashe gets a little irritated when his teacher told him that he was not paying attention, because he was. He always was. He only just chose to ignore the sound of his teacher approaching before. But he does not say this to his teacher, as the person was Kakuzu; a man with a fearful reputation. He hopes that he would not get in Kakuzu's bad book just at the moment of them meeting.
Tiashe turns around then to acknowledge his teacher, and he replies in a calm and low voice.
Thank you for taking the time out to teach me Sensei. I am Tiashe. Tiashe Raggs. I hope I will be able to learn a lot from this session with you.
He then pauses, to remember in his mind what he had learnt about Genjutsu from the academy many years ago. Once he remembers it, he starts to talk.
The illusionary arts are known as Genjutsu. Now, Genjutsu use techniques which produce illusions in a targets mind, which effectively allows the user to have full control of the targets five senses since Genjutsu affects all senses. However, unlike Ninjutsu, Genjutsu techniques produce imaginary effects on the target, and not any real physical attacks.
A person is put under the effects of Genjutsu when the user sends chakra to the targets brain, affecting their chakra flow system by altering the brainwaves. This is what causes the target to see illusions. Just like other techniques, Genjutsu also requires the usage of chakra, and most of the techniques also require the performance of hand seals. But a few do not need hand seals to be performed.
So, what is the purpose of putting someone under a Genjutsu? Well, there are a few reasons. One would be to torture the opponent by giving them mental pain and trauma to make that person feel helpless and trapped. It can also be used to alter the environment around the target, therefore confusing them. And of course, a really important use of it is to extract information from people. But it does not cause them any physical pain, it is merely used to manipulate or brainwash the target.
There are three types of Genjutsu. There is Normal Genjutsu, which can be performed by anyone and is the one that I will be learning from you. There is also Sound Genjutsu, which requires the user to have sound as their ability. This is probably the deadliest of the Genjutsu's since it does not require eye contact to he made. So, it could even be performed on a blind person! Also, Sound Genjutsu can be performed from a further distance. The last type is Sharingan Genjutsu, which of course requires the possession of Sharingan, which I do not have.
Tiashe pauses for a few seconds, trying to remember more of what he had previously learnt. It slowly all comes back to him, so he continues.
Genjutsu is most effective when it is used at a close range from the target. The further away, the weaker the Genjutsu will be. This is why it is rare for it to exceed mid range. Genjutsu also requires a lot of skill to perform, as the user must be intelligent and also have a very fine level of chakra control. And to produce a successful illusion, the chakra must be molded in a certain way, which is why the hand seals are required.
So when a person is trapped in a Genjutsu, it does not necessarily mean that everything is over for them. You see, there are ways with which Genjustu can be escaped from. The first step to break or counter a Genjutsu would be to actually identify that one is trapped in the illusion. Otherwise, it will be meaningless. After that, there are a few ways with which one may escape. One way is to disturb or stop the flow of chakra in the body, which will cause a spike in the chakra. This will cause a disturbance, releasing the technique. Another way would be to cause pain to your body. Someone else may also be there to disrupt the flow in your chakra, which can also get you out. And a Bijuu can also get their Jinchuriki free from the illusion, if they are on good terms with them, that is. And the last way to counter would be for a person with a dojutsu.
So, I think I've covered all that I have learnt about Genjutsu so far Sensei.
Tiashe stops talking, wondering if he had managed to get everything right. Of course, he knew that he had much room for improvement, which was why he was learning Genjutsu from Kakuzu.
I'm somewhat impressed, you know far more than the average student but of course, you still made some mistakes.
Genjutsu can't be used to extract information from a target, those mind-invasive techniques aren't encompassed in this field. Nor can it ever directly control someone's will or actions, only Sharingan genjutsus can do that. This doesn't apply to involuntary actions (such as a knee jerking) that they have no control over but voluntary and conscious ones. You can probe and may attempt to influence them into acting in a certain way, but ultimately the decision is theirs to take. Three types? There are more than that. Smell-based genjutsu which use a medium such as Perfume, Taste-based genjutsu and even illusions which are initiated on touch. You failed to mention the fact that you need to use a chakra surge high enough in rank or pain sufficient to break an illusion. How exactly do you gauge the rank of a Genjutsu technique? Before we proceed, read the following transcript which will detail how our Genjutsu will proceed as well as provide additional information on the subject. Make sure to read all of it.
The first step in realizing a genjutsu is observing for anything overly-obvious or something which would naturally probe your character's suspicion. In battle, I want you to observe even the smallest of disturbances in your surroundings and the slightest inconsistencies. I want you to notice, if a tree begins coiling around you, does it produce growing sounds as it emerges? If a fireball is shot towards you, does the heat of the technique resonate from it and make you feel like the temperature is rising? If you see an illusionary clone walking towards you, does it bend the grass when it walks? If you get burnt by something, does the wound sizzle as the burn is inflicted? Does the water beneath your feet ripple when you walk, or make any splashing sounds?
Pay very close attention to the senses a technique affects, its fundamental to breaking a genjutsu. If a technique doesn't specify the senses it affects, make sure you don't assume anything. Find other ways of seeing through the technique. Does the illusion respect the laws of reality? Does the illusion distort time and happen too abruptly and or does it distort the natural occurrence of events? I can't teach you how to realize every genjutsu, I can only teach you the concept of doing so. The rest is up to how much you take away from this training. One thing to bare in mind is, when you're trying to realize genjutsu, don't come up with extremely complicated thought processes or anything which wouldn't be realistic in the heat of a battle. I don't want you to "god-mod" or try to use knowledge your character doesn't have to break Genjutsus. You must be realistic and legitimate in the way you break genjutsus. I'd hate to be that guy who teaches his students to metagame their way out of illusions >_>
Additional Information I'd like you to read
1) Kai Release Method
( Genjutsu: Kai ) - Illusion Technique: Release
Rank: C-S
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 15-40
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user does one hand seal to focus and then proceeds to disturb his chakra flow by forcefully stopping it momentarily and then "spiking" his spiritual energy, unbalancing his chakra. This dispels any genjutsu set upon the user except MS Eye Techniques, Paralysis-like Genjutsu and Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant. The effectiveness of this technique is dependent upon the skill of the user. A Jounin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to C-rank. An S-class ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to B-rank. A Sannin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to A-rank. A Sage rank user can dispel Genjutsu up to S-Rank. The user may use this technique through physical contact on others to dispel them from Genjutsu. The technique can only be used once per turn and the user still needs to fully follow the logic as to why he figured out it was an illusion.
Using Kai to release Genjutsu is the simplest and arguably most common method. After performing a single handseal, the user will stop their chakra flow for a moment before spiking it to purge the opponent's foreign chakra from your body, hence releasing the illusionary technique. It can range from a C-Rank to an S-Rank technique, depending on the rank of the genjutsu you're trying to break. If an A-Rank Genjutsu is cast on you, you'll use an A-Rank Kai to release the technique. Keep in mind that even if you learn Kai, to break higher ranking genjutsus e.g. A-Ranks, you have to be of the right ninja rank (determined by posts). Also, it requires a single handseal to perform and so this technique can't be used against Genjutsus which paralyze/immobilize your body.
Other things to remember is, its a really uncreative method and some fights have rules stating either "one kai per battle" or "No Kai at all". Make sure to watch out for rules like this and don't become too dependent on using it. I don't think i've ever used Kai xD
2) Pain Release Method
Like you all correctly stated, Pain Release is the quickest but the most consequential of all Genjutsu Release methods. You can inflict this pain upon yourself in various ways e.g. removing a kunai to stab your arm or biting off your tongue. Usually people attempt to simply bite their tongue/the inside of their cheek but this seems like an invalid method.
1) Biting your tongue without removing it will break D-Rank Genjutsu at most
2) Biting off your tongue seems like a disgraceful/embarrassing method to use. Especially if you have to spit it out in front of your opponent. It will make them feel like they have the upper hand
3) The severe blood loss caused by biting off your tongue will give you about three turns to live (possibly less).
4) You can't talk anymore xD
And so as I say to all my students, never release a Genjutsu through biting off your tongue.
This is the chart of releasing genjutsus and the amount of pain you need to inflict on yourself:
D Rank: Chipping a Finger (like one does as he bites to draw blood for a Summoning Jutsu) C Rank: Low level Physical Attacks, Bitting a chunk of your Cheek B Rank: Low ranked Taijutsu/Freestyle A Rank: High ranked Taijutsu, Stabbing Yourself in minor muscle, Cutting yourself, Breaking Smaller bones, Low level Burning/Voltage, Painful Cold S Rank: EIG/Sage level Taijutsu, Breaking Bones, Deep Stabs or cuts, Medium Voltage/Burning, Extreme Painful Cold, Bitting your tongue off
Another nice way I learnt from Better to release Genjutsus is using the C-Rank Stone Spikes technique. When you realize a Genjutsu, whether it paralyzes you or not, channel your doton chakra into the ground and cause a single spike of earth to emerge. Angle the spike the depending on how much pain you want to inflict.
(Doton: Ganchūsō) - Earth Release: Stone Spikes
Rank: C
Type: Attack
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 15
Damage Points: 30
Description: This technique lets the user create a few rock pillars that will protrude from the ground to skew the target. The rock pillars will even pass through obstacles to reach their target
If you're breaking a A-Rank or below gen, angle the spike to strike into your thigh or another part of your non-dominant leg.
If you're breaking S-Rank gen (and have no other options), angle the spike to emerge directly beneath one of your legs, to completely crush it up to the knee region. This will keep you standing up and block blood from gushing out of your body.
This method inflicts serious harm on to you and is only recommended if you have no other options. Sometimes this is the best method to use and so its better to take many wounds rather than fail to counter a Genjutsu. Also, this isn't a possible method to use when you're standing on water or a similar terrain. If you have a bio which can heal or take such wounds e.g. Hidan, Kakuzu, a medical shinobi, using Pain to release genjutsu is very tactical indeed. You don't waste a move countering one of their techniques by making full use of your bio's capabilities.
3) Full body surges
A full body surge is basically a technique which releases/leeks chakra out of every chakra point on your body at the same time. This sudden burst of chakra purges any foreign chakra residing in the body. A full body surge will break Genjutsu of one rank lower than it e.g. an A-Rank Surge breaks B-Rank and below Genjutsus. New rpers often only associate the word "surge" which lightning techniques, when in actuality all elements have potential to be full body surges.
Canon Full body surges
Nagashi (A-Rank)
Earth Release Armour (B-Rank)
Earth Spear (B-Rank)
Lightning Strike Armour (C-Rank)
Hardening Technique (S-Rank)
In our training, I'll not only teach you how to realize Genjutsu but also how to release yourself from the ones we learn. I've hired someone who you can cast all of the illusions you learn on and likewise he'll cast the same illusions on you. When you're under the effects of the genjutsu, I want you to recite out loud how you can logically deduce why you think you're within a illusion. Once you do this, you'll have to find a way to successfully break out of the illusion.
( Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu ) - Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10 (+5 if you use it double)
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion over an area that allows him to manipulate the way an area looks to fool an opponent. He can only change the way the terrain looks, and not any other feature.
For the first technique, I'd like you to cast your partner in a genjutsu which changes a single feature about the battlefield itself e.g. makes a wall rise up, creates a pond or water source and etc. Quite a basic technique, doesn't require much explanation. After you do this, you will be cast in this illusion yourself and you will need to release yourself from it (via your preferred method be it pain, kai or a chakra surge) while reciting how you realize you're trapped in a Genjutsu out loud.
Questions to prompt you
What senses does this illusion effect?
Tiashe gathers chakra, which he then releases into the air. The chakra makes its way into the targets brain, interfering with the brainwaves of the target. Tiashe plays a scenario in the targets head. The target is imagining that he is falling into a large hole, seemingly endless. Then water can be heard, which sounds like it is crashing against rocks.
Then, Tiashe realizes that he too is soon caught in this Genjutsu. This is his first time being caught in one, and he is astonished. He feels like he is not in control of his body, and feels helpless. He decides that he would never like to be caught in one in a battle. He performs a single hand seal, stopping his chakra flow for a moment before spiking it. Whilst he is doing this, he speaks aloud to his teacher, informing him of how he knows he is in a Genjustu.
Ok, so the way I know I am in a Genjutsu here is because of how the terrain changed drastically and very unusually. It is not normal for a large hole to appear under a person, so large that they can not even see the bottom of it. It is even stranger to be hearing water when there is no bottom to this hole. And the water sounds as if it is crashing against rocks, but there are no rocks to be seen, neither is there any water to be seen under me. Therefore, I can deduce from this that I am in a false illusion. Just a Genjutsu.
With this, Tiashe is relieved from the Genjutsu as he used Kai to spike his chakra, causing a disturbance which eliminated the Genjutsu chakra.
Almost. Your release is specific to that usage of the technique, I was going for a general way of realizing you're caught in this illusion, regardless of how it's used. Notice how it only affects the sense of sight. If you used this to create a water source, it would be static and generate no ripples on being disturbed or interacted with. If you used this to turn the floor into lava, no heat would resonate from the pool of magma. Generally anything created through the use of this technique are intangible and serve no real purpose. You used this to create an abyss in which the opponent fell into. That wouldn't happen. A hole would indeed be created but only in appearance.
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes five handseals, appearing to dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals surround the opponent, blocking his vision. This allows the user to mask his movement effectively.
Ah, I was Part 1 Naruto today and just saw this technique in use for the first time. It isn't bad but I dislike the excessive use of handseals for such a low ranking technique. Now I'd like you to perform a string of five handseals to cause your partner to see you "dissolve" into a cloud of cherry blossoms. These same cherry blossom petals will move towards the opponent and cloud his/her vision, allowing you to mask your movements in reality.
Key Points: Lower ranking techniques tend to control less senses, this probably solely controls the sense of sight.
After performing the necessary hand seals, Tiashe sends his chakra into his partners brain, altering his brainwaves. He then causes his partner to envision him dissolving into a cloud of cherry blossoms. These blossoms also block his partners vision, and so it allows him to move around the place with ease without his partner realizing it at all. Of course, these blossoms are not real though and if the partner would realise, the petals did not blow the air around, nor could they be felt. If the partner realized this, Tiashe guessed the partner could escape from the illusion he had placed.
