genjutsu is the using of chakra to disturb the chakra flow of the opponent and make him see, hear and feel illusion.
unlike the ninjutsu and taijutsu genjutsu affects the mind not the body and it causes illusionary damage. it's the same as ninjutsu in the requirement of handseals and the usage of chakra.

there's three forms of genjutsu. 1) normal genjutsu that can be used by normal ninjas
2) sharingan genjutsu that is used only by sharingan wielders that the user can cast genjutsu on his enemy just by eye contact
3) sound genjutsu that tayuya used to cast a genjutsu on shikamaru in sasuke retrieval arc and it's one of the most dangerous types of genjutsu that don't require eye contact and can't be blocked at all

there's many ways to break through a genjutsu:
1) intense real pain that will release the person out of genjutsu
2) stopping the chakra flow of the person (or making a teammate inject his chakra into the person under genjutsu)
3) Chidori Nagashi
4) In the anime it was shown that strong smells like that from the Chilli Pepper Bombs, can counteract genjutsu
5) the bijuus can release their jinchurikis out of genjutsu

Introduction

Genjutsu technique mainly affects the senses of the user, the five senses to be exact, making you see, feel, hear, smell illusions that your mind is manipulated in a certain way via chakra to see, and like you said there are different types of genjutsu like ones that are normal, Sharingan based, and sound based, but normal genjutsu differs into 3 categories.

Different Types Of Genjutsu

First Torturing type genjutsu, which affects your mind, in the illusion you are exposed to physical damage which leads to mental damage, damaging your mind while you are in the genjutsu, this type of genjutsu is mainly used as a way to decrease your stamina, and if the genjutsu technique is strong enough, it could lead to unconsciousness, this type of illusion techniques mostly require eye contact, like Sharingan genjutsu techniques.

There's also a deception type genjutsu, this one doesn't involve doing mental damage to the opponent's brain, but simply making them see illusions that would mask the user's real intentions or actions, this type of genjutsu is used to draw your opponent in a situation where you would take them by surprise, like for example making the opponent see that you disappear into a whirlwind of leaves, when you are actually standing still, then you approach the opponent stealthly.

Another type of genjutsu is militia type illusions, which uses a hit and run style, they use pinpoint rapid techniques to confuse the enemy and throw them off their feet while chaining elemental attacks and strong slower painfull illusions. The disadvantages is that moves tend to be interrupted and not fully achieved. Simple reason is that you have 3 moves so if you do a quick disabling gen, an elemental attack and a pain gen, you won't normally get to use the pain gen. Its a harder style to balance.

Layering Genjutsu

When using multiple genjutsu techniques on a person, it uses a layering effect. Basically if you use a genjutsu that affects the opponent's hearing, and after that you use a genjutsu that affects the opponent's sight, the layered effect is that the opponent will have both his sight and hearing affecting simultaneously, suffering from both genjutsu techniques at the same time, you might wonder then since you are in 2 genjutsu techniques, how would you be capable of piercing through them, it's done by breaking through the higher ranked genjutsu technique out of the two.

Breaking Through Genjutsu

Now onto the final part, which is how to break through genjutsus, there are 4 main ways to get out of genjutsu, first is done by your own power, and the second one is done by your teammates/allies, firstly before attempting to break through any genjutsu technique, you have to give a valid reason as to why you know that you are inside a genjutsu, then break through it, if you have a sharingan then you can see the changes in the visual illusions easily alongside being capable of seeing your own chakra's irregularity, meaning that you are inside a genjutsu, anyway first thing that can get you out of genjutsu and probably the most powerful, is pain. but a sufficient pain, like stabbing yourself, deep cuts, or biting off your tongue, biting on the tongue wouldn't generate enough pain to break through a genjutsu, and stabbing yourself with a kunai for example, is equivalent to break through up to an S-rank genjutsu technique.

Second one is chakra surges, this is done by you, basically using a technique that sends an all out full body surge inside your chakra circularity system, basically flushing out the genjutsu chakra and breaking through the genjutsu, this is only done by technique that have a full body surge, not a partial one, which has to be one rank above the genjutsu technique's rank in case of elemental techniques, or that has to be 2 ranks above genjutsu techniques in case of raw chakra techniques.

Third type of breaking through genjutsu is using the Kai technique, this is done by halting your chakra flow within your own body, then sending it flowing in a burst, successfully messing up the flow of your opponent's chakra and thus breaking through the illusion, however there are types of genjutsu that the kai technique is incapable of breaking through, like for example the paralysis type illusions that cause your body to be immobilized, because the Kai requires clapping your hands, and when you are inside a paralyzing genjutsu you can't move your body.

Fourth and last type of breaking through genjutsu is having someone else inject chakra into your body whether it's done by a teammate, or by other means, when someone injects chakra into you he has to use the "Kai" technique, breaking through the genjutsu technique you are in, this also includes shadow clones of your own that inject chakra into you, it's considered using the Kai technique, or when a bijuu injects chakra to the Jinchuuriki that is capable of controlling it.

As we proceed with learning the genjutsu techniques, i'll explain which type of genjutsu it is, now any questions before we proceed?

just one question, how can we cast genjutsu on the opponent?
I already know the eye contact method and the way an expert can cast a genjutsu just by pointing with his index finger at his opponent (the same way Itachi did during Kazekage retrieval arc)

You mainly need a medium to cast a genjutsu onto your opponent, for example Sharingan genjutsu is cast through the Sharingan looking at your opponent's eyes, a sound genjutsu is cast by a sound instrument, playing a certain melody that's heard by your opponent, if no medium exists, you have to use handseals in order to apply the genjutsu onto your opponent, genjutsu without handseals that's normal is not possible, unless you have a Mangekyou Sharingan, which allows you to cast any genjutsu without handseals as long as you have a clear line of sight between yourself and your opponent.

Now to proceed with the training, i want you to sit in a meditative state, while focusing your chakra into both of your palms, so much that i want to see your palms glow, from the chakra concentration, this will help you in chakra manipulation, which is what genjutsu is all about, it requires tremendous chakra manipulation abilities.

*as i hear your instructions i sit down like this (see the picture below). then i close my eyes and clap my hands together and start manipulating my chakra and concentrating it into my both hands. after 5 minutes of meditating my hands start glowing from the great amount of chakra concentrated in my hands*
