Everything I know about Genjutsu:
Genjutsu (Illusionary techniques) are a type of techniques utilised by ninja similar to ninjutsu, still requiring the use of chakra and handseals, but instead of causing physical damage, genjutsu techniques cause mental damage and produce an illusionary effect. Genjutsu is used by sending chakra into the target's brain to disrupt their senses and create an illusion. Doing this requires a direct sensory link with the target, usually eye contact. When used correctly, genjutsu can be a very deadly skill. The members of the Uchiha clan are known for their powerful genjutsu, which comes from their dojutsu kekkei genkai, the Sharingan. The Sharingan and the Mangekyo Sharingan can produce some of the most powerful illusions, such as Tsukuyomi and Kotoamatsukami.
There are multiple ways to counter genjutsu. The victim can use a jutsu which sends a spike of chakra throughout their body to dispel the illusion. Also, an ally can send their chakra into the victim to stop the genjutsu. The Sharingan can break through most illusions and the Byakugan can sense the chakra disruption but the user will have to get themself out of the illusion. A bijuu can break their jinchuriki out of genjutsu as well. Genjutsu can also be broken by using pain.

Correct for the most part
Genjutsu, or Illusionary Arts, unlike ninjutsu, don't produce a real, palpable, feasible effect; it produces an illusionary effect. With a specific KG however, the illusions can become so strong that the body will be fooled into mimicking in real life the fake effects its perceiving through the illusion. There exists two types of Genjutsu: the passive, non chakra fueled ones (basically illusions to our senses like visual paradoxes and such which have little use in the RP and can be easily overcome through experience and logic) and the active, chakra fueled ones. Within the active chakra fueled ones two subtypes exist: Dojutsu fueled Genjutsu and Normal Genjutsu.
Genjutsu works by using chakra to disturb the chakra flow of the opponent, specially in the brain, altering his senses. By doing this you can make him perceive any thing his senses are capable of: pain, heat, cold, tickles, iching, etc etc. A ninja can make the opponent taste, smell, feel, see or hear anything he wants. However, because this is done by using your chakra to manipulate his chakra flow, the ninja needs to be close or, many times, have direct eye contact or even physical contact. This is the main limitation of Genjutsu: range. The further you are away from your opponent, the harder it is to induce the fluctuation on his chakra flow to produce the genjutsu.
How exactly does it work? Well, every one has a balanced chakra flow. The chakra flows in a balanced combination of both physical and spiritual energies. The ratio between them vary from person to person (that is how each person has a different chakra signature) but its always calm and balanced. To produce a genjutsu, a ninja uses his chakra to disturb that balance in a controlled way. A fluctuation is created in the persons chakra "wave length" and makes it fluctuate in a given way. This produces the illusion by scrambling the users link between his Spirit and his Body which effectively is the link between his mind and his senses. To make your chakra be capable of doing the correct fluctuation, you need to use, most of the times, handseals. These help you mold and shape and focus your chakra to the correct wave length you want to induce, thus enabling you to use it to disturb the targets chakra flow.
And Deidara wasn't immune to genjutsu, when he realized he was in one that affects his vision he could dilate his pupil to pierce the illusion, that is a unique method of breaking one, however not to be confused with Immunity which would suggest he was incapable of being affected by them in the first place.
Now then, *throws you a scroll that contains a map of the human brain and the chakra circulatory system.* We will start with basic illusions. Imagine a change to this training field. It could be as simple as the ground changing color, trees falling down, or the entire thing changing to a desert or something. Send a small amount of your chakra to the part of the brain that understands what the eyes see and disrupt it so their brain believes they are seeing the change that you want.

I look at the scroll and study it carefully, then I understand how to use a genjutsu. I stare at you directly into your eyes, sending a small amount of my chakra into the part of the brain that tells the eyes what they can see. I imagine that all there a dark clouds in the sky and it is violently raining and there is a thunderstorm. Using the chakra that I sent into your brain, I manipulate your vision to make you see this.

Ways to counter: You could figure out that it's a genjutsu if they make you see something too unusual, and then break out of it.

That idea, of changing jutsus images into other elements is actually a Custom Jutsu of Scorps, this genjutsu wouldn't work on ninjutsus only the natural surroundings.

Firstly, I perform the five handseals necessary for the technique. Seeing my sensei make a clone, I look into its eyes, sending chakra into it's brain and starting the illusion. To the clone, it appears that I have dissolved into countless sakura petals. Before it has time to react, I use the illusionary petals to conceal my movements and then attack the clone, dispersing it.

To start the technique, I perform the required handseal. Then, after making eye contact with you, I send chakra into your brain, allowing me to control what you see. I throw an paper bomb at you and use the chakra I sent into your brain to make you see a clone of myself running towards you. The bomb detonates, causing you to be caught in a violent explosion.

You could use another genjutsu to make them see something else to distract them away from the clone/bomb to increase the chance of it hitting them.
Ways to counter: This seems like it happens pretty fast, so I don't think you could find out it's a genjutsu before the bomb explodes. You could try and attack the clone, which means you attack the explosive tag (I think the explosive tag is disguised as the clone) and that might stop it from detonating ...

When you try to attack the clones, they appear to multiply, increasing their numbers. While you are busy attacking the army of illusionary clones, I blend in with them and attack you.

The illusionary clones will multiply when attacked and the opponent will think they are real so they will try to attack all of them
You can attack the opponent when they are attacking the clones
Weak points
The opponent might figure out it's a genjutsu because you do not perform a handseal to create the clones
The opponent might figure out it's a genjutsu because it would require an large amount of chakra to create that many clones

Last D rank, form two seals and cause them to see a whirlwind of leaves around them, once the leaf storm dies down they see their worst nightmare which shocks them and can (if they suck, like sakura) cause them to faint.

After performing two handseals, I look into your eyes, casting a genjutsu on you. Then leaves start swirling around you. After a while, the swirling of the leaves stops and after a few seconds, you see an image of your greatest fear right in front of you, causing you to faint.

Description: The user does one hand seal to focus and then proceeds to disturb his chakra flow by forcefully stopping it momentarily and then "spiking" his spiritual energy, unbalancing his chakra. This dispels any genjutsu set upon the user except MS Eye Techniques, Paralysis-like Genjutsu and Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant. The effectiveness of this technique is dependent upon the skill of the user. A Jounin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to C-rank. An S-class ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to B-rank. A Sannin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to A-rank. A Sage rank user can dispel Genjutsu up to S-Rank. The user may use this technique through physical contact on others to dispel them from Genjutsu. The technique can only be used once per turn and the user still needs to fully follow the logic as to why he figured out it was an illusion.

Then unleash a surge of chakra through your body flushing out any foreign chakra and resetting your chakra flow to normal.
