There were a couple of things that became his downfall:

1) Rushing to get fit for the World Cup after his knee surgery.
2) He lost pace after his knee surgery.
3) The huge price tag didn't help his confidence after an already mediocre season at Liverpool. All the bad press afterwards at Chelsea didn't help either.

Still one of my favourite strikers ever, even if he didn't deliver at Chelsea. He was outstanding at Liverpool.
