Gedo Mazou wtf?

So I was reading some parts of the manga and this questions just came to my head.
When Nagato summoned the gedo mazou against danzo, those weird rods stuck to his back binding him to the statue right? afterwards the statue was only summoned by Nagato aka Pein to seal the tailled beasts and we saw the original nagato he still had the rods on his back...so.. how come Tobi Houdini keeps summoning the statue without the rods thing happening to him?
Ps: he did state, after Nagatos death, that he planned to sync Sasuke with Gedo Mazou later (implying that 1. the statue needed someone to be sync with it so that it could be summoned; 2. Sasuke was Nagatos substitute for statue) so...hum..wtf?:shrug:

The statue needed chakra so it used Nagato as its chakra. Then after it took Nagato's chakra he looked slimmer. The rods look like they drain his chakra.
