Gai not dying was actually good

Kishimoto needed a way to show what one of Naruto's new powers is. That's all Guy was useful for in that scene, a setup for Naruto's new power. Neji's death added extra tension to the scene because it set us up to expect Guy's death, because with Neji's death, we were conditioned to expect anything including another main character death.

Plus it was a way to put the 8th Gate in his manga, and show what the 8th Gate is capable of; he landed hits on Madara when nobody else was able to. It wouldn't have been very good writing if he didn't find a way to tie up the whole Eight Gates thing by never showing it at some point.

Fair enough Madara recovered insanely quick but he couldn't do ANYTHING to stop Gai in any way. Gai was just too OP for him to handle. If it wasn't for Gai, everyone would have been destroyed before naruto and sasuke came back to life.

Naruto saving him was a huge ass pull. He was supposed to die in honor. He was able to go toe to toe on Madara but naw Nardo saved him.

Honestly, I didn't want him to die yet. I just felt that wasn't enough. He did a fine job but what about Lee?..he didn't say anything to Lee as well.

It felt way for me cause Kishi gave Naruto exactly what was needed right on time to totally negate the endgame of the last gate.

This 'war' is supposed to be about sacrifices. Not every tactic or attack launched is successful. Gai chose to die for his village - for the Shinobi World as a whole, to protect those that couldn't protect themselves. Team 10's parents, Neji, Gai, all of these people were supposed to be sacrifices for this war. Gai not dying was pitiful.

Guy not dying made all his efforts against Madara, pointless. If Guy would have died after fighting Madara, it would have built up his character and add character development other characters like Rocklee and Kakashi.
