No1: Gaara's sand defense is from Gaara's mother. Not Shukaku, so small Naruto fail there dude. For a guy with great debating skill and knowledge, I'm surprised.
No2: Not over-rating him, I am using Naruto references which happened. I am not making anything up.

Fully agree that it was outclassed by them. This is why I am saying that it has improved so much.
Lee & Sasuke were using speed granted by the 8-gates technique and reverse lotus, very highly skilled techniques indeed and supremely advanced Taijutsu.

Do just double check though. Cause it is also possible, although unlikely, that the officially released books had been printed incorrectly and that the anime didn't stick to the script.

Quickly watch this from 6:00 mins onward. You'll see.

In the subs it does say that Gaara guarded against Sasuke's Amaterasu. However, are the subs for the anime wrong, or is the translation for the manga wrong. Because from that video I understand that Gaara makes the first move. He says: I know!! and attacks Sasuke, then Sasuke uses his Enton defense.

Fighter2011: I understand that when Gaara's sand rushed out of the Gourd it kinda looks like he's gonna attack and maybe he was gonna. But it's quite clear that Gaara's sand is blocking the Amaterasu when Sasuke tries to land it on him. I thought that was quite clear.
Gaara's sand doesn't rush Sasuke, Sasuke's eye preps & bleeds to use Amaterasu. That is attacking my friend.

You can say it's just his mom, but really it's not all his mom. Watch a video of him using a shield. He moves his arm most of the time. Sure, mainly its his mom, but he helps it out.

Entirely a good point. While it moves of it's own accord, Gaara can also choose to use it how he wishes. He can make his defence work the way he wants it to and does this mostly in the anime but also sometimes in the manga.
Gaara's defence is his mothers love/a jutsu she used before her death.
I say this because that's what the anime&manga have shown us, not because it's just my opinion.
It is of course not 100% his mother controlling it or Gaara would have no way of controlling it. The automated defence is Karura's will but Gaara can still choose to use it himself.
