The impact blew open madara's susanoo and destroyed him wheras gaara wasnt hurt,and it wasnt shards,he was in the impact point of the meteor when he and onoki stopped it and was there when they both crashed down. Thats far more powerful that hirudora and was with just a stream of sand. Hirudora is doing shit
lee got beat by gaara,he got his arm and leg crushed and gaara walked out,he didnt even break his armour. Sasuke also lost to gaara as naruto saved him.
The only way gaara could win is if he was in a desert where lots of sand is already present becuase with guys speed, he will need to literally have instant access to LOADS of sand to protect himself against guys POWERFUL and QUICK attacks and even that will be a challenge since he cant control that sand as quickly as his gourd sand

The OP say sand but we all know Oasis carry tons of sand. Sand is Gaara main weapon therefore he is using the sand like the time he fought Deidara.
Gaara seen lee fight and looks exactly like Mighty Guy. Gaara is no idiot and would take this battle like most battles up in the air. 8/10 Gaara is going to fight in the air this is not uncommon.
First - 4 gates is not fast enough to blizt Gaara. So Gaara is making it to the air.
Now the hard part comes when he goes to the air would he go with a sand stem haning on to the ground or complete airless. He is going without a stem because Gai just tried to blitz him. He knows that guy would probable run up the stem to get to him. So he would move on the sand without a tail to it.
If gai uses the turtle to jump while trying to reach him in the air. Gaara will lock on to Gai while mid way in the air and catch his feet for a flinging. If that fail he will switch his location up way in the sky because trutfully why would he need to be close if he can wrap himself up in the
Shield of Sand of ball shape one and summon an eye for direct assault

Now with this eye Gaara can go as high in the sky as he wants to while this eye focus on guy and Gaara controls the attacks at a safe distance with tons of sand on his side.
